o Menlo Park-Based Next Issue Media Lands $50M Investment from KKR

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Next Issue Media, a Menlo Park-based provider of digital access to magazines, said on Wednesday it has landed a new $50 million investment from KKR. The company, a joint venture of publishers Condé Nast, Hearst Magazines, Meredith, News Corp., Rogers Communications and Time, said it will use the funds to further develop its digital magazine platform and deliver content to a broader audience. Next Issue has developed a tablet and smartphone app that delivers unlimited access to 145 magazines -- including People, Vogue, Better Homes & Gardens and Esquire -- starting at $9.99 a month. The app included access to current issues and back catalogs, as well as digital-only extras such as videos, extended photo galleries, Twitter feeds and live web links. Morgan Guenther, the CEO of Next Issue, said his company aims to "fill one of the last subscription white spaces in the digital media world, following successful models in video and music."

o Cyber Monday Online Sales Break All-Time Single-Day Record

Reston, Va. -- Marking the heaviest online spending day in U.S. history, e-commerce sales on Cyber Monday reached $2.04 billion, up 17% from the same day a year ago, according to new figures from comScore. It became the only day ever to surpass $2 billion in online sales. "The online holiday shopping season is clearly going very well at the moment and is currently running ahead of forecast," said Gian Fulgoni, comScore's chairman emeritus. "Any notion that Cyber Monday is declining in importance is really unfounded, as it continues to post new historical highs and reflects the ongoing strength of online this holiday season." That, combined with lagging brick-and-mortar sales over the holiday weekend, could signal an accelerating shift to online buying, according to Fulgoni. "The data we're seeing suggest it may be more a change in shopping behavior than a lack of consumer demand," he said.
