o San Francisco-Based Instacart Raises $220 Million in New Funding

San Francisco -- Working toward its goal of becoming a household name in the grocery industry, San Francisco-based Instacart, developer of a home grocery delivery service, said it has raised $220 million in its third round of funding, led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB). Other participants in the round include Comcast Ventures, Dragoneer Investment Group, Thrive Capital, Valiant Capital and previous backers Andreessen Horowitz, Khosla Ventures and Sequoia. The company, which now has raised $275 million since its inception in 2012, said it will use the proceeds for category expansion, continued geographic growth and technology enhancements. "Our vision is to help all types of local retailers get online and offer their customers one-hour delivery," said founder and CEO Apoorva Mehta. "This financing round will help us accelerate and scale those efforts." Instacart utilizes a crowdsourced labor force -- dubbed "personal shoppers" -- to shop for and deliver orders using their own transportation in as little as one hour.

o Menlo Park-Based Facebook Launches AMBER Alerts in News Feeds

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Facebook said on Tuesday it has partnered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to begin sending AMBER Alerts to people's news feeds. The alerts, including photos and other details about missing children, will be pushed to Facebook users in targeted search areas. The Menlo Park-based company said a 2014 case helped inspire the program. In that case, an 11-year-old girl from Maryland was safely recovered after a South Carolina motel owner recognized her from an AMBER Alert that a friend had shared on Facebook. "It's amazing word-of-mouth efforts like this that inspired us to develop a more systematic way to help find missing children on Facebook," wrote Emily Vacher, Facebook's trust and safety manager, in a blog post.
