o Milpitas-Based SanDisk Spins Out ioControl Business

Milpitas, Calif. -- SanDisk, the Milpitas-based maker of flash storage products, said on Thursday it has completed the spin-out of its ioControl business, which the company acquired as part of its acquisition of Fusion-io last year. The business, which develops hybrid storage appliances that combine PCIe flash storage with traditional hard disk drives, now will be known as NexGen Storage Inc. -- the name it originally held before it was acquired by Fusion-io. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "Hybrid systems incorporating hard-disk drives are not part of SanDisk's strategic focus," said Sumit Sadana, SanDisk's executive vice president and chief strategy officer. "Spinning out the ioControl business allows us to focus our resources on our core business, while positioning the independent company to address the significant opportunities in the dynamic enterprise storage market." John Spiers, co-founder and CEO of the original NexGen, will lead the new company.

o Report: Sunnyvale-Based Good Technology Cuts More than 100 Jobs

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Good Technology, a Sunnyvale-based developer of enterprise mobility tools that allow employees to connect to corporate networks using their personal mobile devices, has laid off between 100-140 employees, according to a report in TechCrunch. The site, citing multiple unnamed sources, said the cuts -- representing more than 10% of the company's staff -- are a bid to trim revenue ahead of a planned initial public offering (IPO). Good filed last May to raise up to $100 million, but has since delayed the IPO.

o San Francisco-Based Fandor Names Chris Kelly as Interim CEO

San Francisco -- Fandor, the San Francisco-based developer of a curated film streaming and community platform, has named lead investor Chris Kelly, a former executive at Facebook, as its interim CEO. He will succeed Ted Hope, who plans to pursue a new film production venture, and will remain a close advisor to the company. Kelly joined Facebook in 2005 as one of its first senior employees, and at various times served as general counsel, vice president of corporate development, chief privacy officer and head of global public policy. He left in 2009 to pursue the Democratic nomination for Attorney General of California, and a year later launched Kelly Investments, which focuses on the technology, media and finance industries.

o Apple's App Store Starts Year with Single-Day and Weekly Sales Records

Cupertino, Calif. -- New Year's Day was the single biggest day in the history of Apple's App Store, the company announced Thursday. The day was part of a record-breaking week in which customers spent nearly half a billion dollars on apps and in-app purchases. That follows a year in which App Store billings rose 50% and apps generated over $10 billion in revenue for developers. The company said that the recent boost has been fueled by the recent introduction of iOS 8 and the frameworks HealthKit -- for health and fitness developers -- and HomeKit -- for home automation.

o New Survey Reveals Top Cities for Employee Innovation

Menlo Park, Calif. -- When it comes to creative thinking, professionals in Miami; Philadelphia; Washington, DC; and Dallas lead the pack, according to a new survey by Menlo Park-based Robert Half Management Resources. All told, 43% of CFOs in Miami cited innovation as a strength of their workforce, with the other three cities trailing slightly behind. Nationwide, nearly a third of CFOs characterized their employees as "very innovative." The research also found companies are taking steps to foster innovation, providing development options, ranging from training and rewards to opportunities for employee collaboration with consultants. "Organizations need to embed innovation in their hiring criteria and corporate culture," said Paul McDonald, senior executive director for Robert Half. "Managers can start by actively soliciting ideas from staff, creating safe environments to take risks, and ensuring employees have the time and resources to explore new solutions to business challenges."
