o Activist Investor Renews Call for Yahoo to Merge with AOL

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Activist investor Starboard Value has renewed its call for Sunnyvale-based Yahoo to merge with AOL, following media reports that the company is considering other large acquisitions. Starboard said in a letter on Thursday that it was "increasingly concerned" by media reports of Yahoo planning to acquire various cable assets, including Scripps Networks Interactive and Time Warner's CNN. "We continue to believe that Yahoo must significantly reduce costs to improve profitability in its core business and should be considering a combination with AOL," wrote Jeffrey Smith, Starboard's managing member, in a letter to Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer. Smith said the combination would provide cost synergies of $1-$1.5 billion while giving Yahoo a strong growth platform "given AOL's progress in mobile and video advertising." Starboard has been pushing for an AOL tie-up since September. The news follows reports last week that Verizon Communications is in talks to potentially acquire AOL in a bid to bolster its ad technology and expand its mobile video offerings,

o San Francisco-Based Uber Cuts Prices in 48 Markets

San Francisco -- Looking to spur more business in some of its newer markets, San Francisco-based on-demand car service Uber Technologies said it has slashed prices in 48 U.S. markets. No markets in the Bay Area are part of the latest promotion. "As things slow in the winter season, we will be reducing prices in 48 of our newer Uber cities to achieve better outcomes for both riders and drivers," the company wrote in a blog post. The company called the price cuts, which went into effect Friday, "seasonal." The move comes after Uber also implemented price cuts in some of its larger cities over the past year.
