San Francisco -- Birst, a San Francisco-based developer of cloud business intelligence and analytics tools, said it has raised $65 million in a new round of funding, led by Wellington Management. Previous backers Sequoia Capital, Hummer Winblad, DAG Ventures and Northgate Capital also participated in the round, which the company will use to strengthen its international presence, drive sales and marketing and invest in enhanced product capabilities. Birst, which now has raised $156 million since its inception, said its two-tier data architecture is designed to unify data from across the company and deliver it to business users.

o Palo Alto-Based Vivo Capital Closes New $750 Million Investment Fund

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Vivo Capital, a Palo Alto-based healthcare investment firm, said on Wednesday it has closed a new $750 million fund, bringing its total funds under management to more than $1.7 billion. The firm said it plans to invest the fund, known as Vivo Capital Fund VIII, primarily in later development-stage pharmaceutical and medical device companies in the U.S., as well as revenue-stage healthcare companies in greater China. Vivo said it plans to continue focusing on both countries in an effort to forge cross-border partnerships, helping companies acquire new products and expand the market for their existing products.

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Agilent Technologies, a Santa Clara-based provider of instruments and software to the life sciences, diagnostics and applied chemical markets, on Wednesday named Mike McMullen as its new CEO. McMullen, who had been the company's president and COO, succeeds Bill Sullivan, who previously announced his plans to retire. Sullivan will remain an advisor until he retires at the end of October. McMullen becomes Agilent's third president and CEO since the company spun off from HP in 1999. He was appointed president, chief operating officer and CEO-elect in September.

o S.F.-Based Conversa Health Lands $2.5 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Conversa Health, the San Francisco-based developer of a cloud-based platform used for physician-patient collaboration between visits, said on Wednesday it has raised $2.5 million in a new round of seed funding, and named Daniel Dean as its CTO. The company said it will use the capital to expand its Digital Checkup service with distribution partners in care management, population health and customer relationship management. Dean previously served as the chief information officer (CIO) for Health Share of Oregon, He also previously helped pioneer electronic health records at MedicaLogic/GE, and has held product and technology leadership positions at Responsys, WebMD and Press Ganey. In addition, Conversa said it has formed a new medical advisory board, under the leadership of Chief Medical Officer Danny Sands. The board will create clinical content for the company's Digital Checkup platform.

Oakland -- A New York-based group called Phat Startup is planning to bring its Hip Hop-inspired tech startup conference to Oakland this summer. The organization called its Aug. 14 Tech808 conference a "mashup of Hip Hop culture, tech and entrepreneurship" aimed at minority and millennial entrepreneurs. "We are starting to create a community of entrepreneurs that come from urban culture and urban backgrounds," Phat Startup co-founder Anthony Frasier told USA Today. "Most of the people we appeal to won't ever go to Silicon Valley. So the question is, how do you get that information? That's what Phat Startup is about." The group also is planning conferences in Washington, DC and New York.
