o Emeryville-Based Tanium Lands $52M Investment from Andreessen Horowitz

Emeryville, Calif. -- Tanium, an Emeryville-based developer of security and systems management technology, said on Tuesday it has secured a new $52 million investment from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. The firm initially invested $90 million into the company last May. The funding comes following a year in which the company quadrupled its total billings and number of employees, and finished the year cash-flow positive. "We started Tanium in 2007 with the goal of re-inventing how organizations secure and manage their endpoints," said co-founder and CTO Orion Hindawi. "The ability to execute on this explosive market demand -- while remaining cash flow positive -- is a testament to our company, our people and our technology."

o San Francisco-Based Spruce Lands $15 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Spruce, a San Francisco-based provider of telemedicine services focused on dermatological conditions, said on Tuesday it has raised $15 million in its first round of funding. Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers led the round, which also included participation from Baseline Ventures, Cowboy Ventures and Google Ventures. The company will use the proceeds to support its growth and national expansion. Spruce's iOS mobile app connects consumers directly with board-certified dermatologists for virtual visits and ongoing care. The company's latest product covers a range of dermatological conditions beyond its original focus on acne, including fine lines and wrinkles, skin discoloration, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, male hair loss, eyelash thinning, rashes and bug bites and stings. Treatments cost $40 a visit.

o San Francisco-Based ProsperWorks Raises $7.5 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- ProsperWorks, a San Francisco-based developer of customer relationship management (CRM) tools synced with Google apps, said on Tuesday it has raised $7.5 million in its first round of funding, led by True Ventures. Previous backers Bloomberg Beta, Crunchfund and angel investors also took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $10 million. ProsperWorks said it aims to remove the inefficiencies associated with CRM by reducing the time wasted entering data and switching between applications. Developed with the Google for Work productivity suite, the software automatically loads data from Google accounts. "CRM has become a four-letter word, with employees having to constantly feed the system," said co-founder and CEO Jon Lee. "ProsperWorks was specifically created to enable employees to work smarter and faster… all within Google's familiar interface."

o FTC Finalizes Settlement with Sony Over PlayStation Vita Ads

San Mateo, Calif. -- Sony Computer Entertainment America and its former ad agency on Tuesday settled charged with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that they falsely advertised certain capabilities of the PlayStation Vita handheld gaming console, which was introduced for sale in 2012. The FTC alleged that San Mateo-based SCEA and Deutsch LA deceived consumers with false claims about several "game changing" technological features of the device in late 2011 and early 2012. The FTC also claimed that Deutsch LA misled consumers by urging its employees to create awareness and excitement about the PS Vita on Twitter, without instructing them to disclose their connection to the ad agency or its then-client. Under the settlement, consumer who bought the console before June 1, 2012 will have their choice of either $25, in cash or a credit refund, or a $50 merchandise voucher.
