o San Francisco-Based Freshdesk Raises $50 Million in Fifth Round

San Francisco -- Freshdesk, a San Francisco-based developer of web-based customer support software, said on Monday it has raised $50 million in its fifth round of funding, led by Tiger Global. Accel Partners and Google Capital also took part in the round, which the company will use to bolster its products expand to meet demand for its platforms. The round follows a year in which Freshdesk doubled its customer base to 40,000, and also launched Freshservice, a web-based IT service desk. "This investment will help us continue to evolve our products and scale our business to meet demand from customers around the world," said CEO Girish Mathrubootham. The company now has raised $94 million since its inception in 2010.

o Mountain View-Based Synopsys to Acquire Codenomicon

Mountain View, Calif. -- Synopsys, a Mountain View-based developer of electronic design automation (EDA) and semiconductor technology, said on Monday it will acquire Finland-based software security company Codenomicon. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Synopsys said the acquisition will bolster its presence in the software security market, helping software developers find and fix security vulnerabilities and protect applications from security attacks. Codenomicon focuses on software embedded in chips and devices. "Synopsys will expand its reach to provide a more robust software security solution with a full set of tools to help ensure the integrity, privacy and safety of an organization's most critical software applications," said Chi-Foon Chan, the president and co-CEO of Synopsys.

o Menlo Park-Based Spirox Lands $18.5 Million in Second Round

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Spirox, a Menlo Park-based medical device company, said on Monday it has raised $18.5 million in its second round of funding, co-led by Venrock and Aisling Capital. Previous backers Aperture Venture Partners, Correlation Ventures and Western Technology Investment also participated. Spirox, which is developing a minimally invasive system to be used by physicians and plastic surgeons to treat patients with nasal obstruction, plans to use the proceeds to complete development, seek U.S. marketing authorization and initiate product commercialization. "This funding is further validation of our technology which has the potential to provide relief for millions of patients suffering from nasal obstruction," said CEO Duke Rohlen.

o San Francisco-Based AppDynamics Settles Patent Dispute with CA

San Francisco -- AppDynamics, a San Francisco-based developer of tools designed to simplify the management of complex web applications, said on Monday that it has settled its ongoing patent ion with CA. The deal resolves all pending litigation between the companies dating back to 2013, including a patent case that CA brought against AppDynamics in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and a declaratory judgment action that AppDynamics brought against CA in California. Under the settlement, AppDynamics said it will make a "modest fixed payment" for a perpetual license to the patents in question.
