o Menlo Park-Based IVP Closes New $1.4 Billion Investment Fund

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), a later-stage venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, said it has closed a new $1.4 billion investment fund -- the largest in its 35-year history. The firm plans to invest $10-$100 million in 12-15 companies a year, both in the U.S. consumer and enterprise sectors. "There has been an explosion in seed financings coupled with companies waiting longer to go public," the firm wrote in a blog post. "These two factors massively increase the opportunity set for later-stage private financings." The new fund, known as IVP XV, increases the firm's cumulative committed capital to $5.4 billion. General partners include Todd Chaffee, Somesh Dash, Steve Harrick, Eric Liaw, Jules Maltz, Sandy Miller and Dennis Phelps. After 26 years as a general partner at IVP, Norm Fogelsong will serve the new fund as an advisory partner. Since its inception in 1980, IVP has invested in over 300 companies, with 101 of those going public. Consumer investments have included HomeAway, Kayak, LegalZoom, LifeLock, Netflix, Prosper, Shazam, Snapchat, SoundCloud, Supercell, The Honest Company and Twitter, while enterprise investments have included AppDynamics, ArcSight, ComScore, Datalogix, Domo, Dropbox, Fleetmatics, Marketo, MySQL, Omniture, OnDeck, Pure Storage, Slack and Zenefits.

o Investment Firms Complete $3.5 Billion Deal for Riverbed Technology

San Francisco -- Private equity firm Thoma Bravo and Teachers' Private Capital on Friday completed their $3.5 billion acquisition of San Francisco-based application performance infrastructure company Riverbed Technology. Under the deal, first announced in December, Riverbed stockholders received $21 a share in cash. Riverbed now has ceased trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol "RVBD." "With this acquisition now complete, our team can begin to move forward with the strategic initiatives that will take us to the next stage of growth," said Jerry Kennelly, the company's chairman and CEO. "As a private company, Riverbed is better positioned to pursue our long term goals, and has greater flexibility to develop best-of breed technologies that deliver superior application performance for our customers."

Adam Street Partners led the equity round, with previous backers Bessemer Ventures and Shasta Ventures also participating. City National provided the debt financing. Adams Street partner Dave Welsh has joined the company's board. Founded in 2008, Smule has created a social network powered by a family of mobile apps, including Ocarina, Magic Piano, Sing! o Department of Defense Unveils New Cyber Strategy at Stanford

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Looking to strengthen the nation's cyber defense posture over the next several years, the Department of Defense has released its new cyber strategy, updating its previous strategy from 2011. Goals of the program, unveiled Thursday at Stanford University, include defending DoD networks and systems, defending the nation against cyber attacks and providing cyber support to military operational and contingency plans. "In some ways, what we're doing about this threat is similar to what we do about more conventional threats," said Defense Secretary Ash Carter. "We like to deter malicious action before it happens and we like to be able to defend against incoming attacks as well as pinpoint where an attack came from." He said that stronger partnerships throughout the government, as well as private sector security teams at companies such as FireEye, Crowdstrike and HP, have improved the department's ability to respond to attacks. Carter also on Thursday visited Facebook's campus in Menlo Park, and on Friday was scheduled to meet with executives at $4 billon venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

o Comcast Abandon's $45 Million Takeover of Time Warner Cable

Philadelphia -- Abandoning a deal that would've united the nation's two largest cable operators, Comcast said on Friday it has terminated its planned $45 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable. Intense regulatory pressure reportedly quashed the deal, which raised fears among consumer groups of higher prices for services such as cable TV and broadband Internet, as well as the stifling of new competition. "Today, we move on," wrote Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts in a statement. "Of course, we would have liked to bring our great products to new cities, but we structured this deal so that if the government didn't agree, we could walk away."
