o San Francisco's Funding Circle Raises $150 Million for U.S. Expansion

San Francisco -- Funding Circle, the U.K. operator of an online marketplace for business lending with U.S. headquarters in San Francisco, said it has raised $150 million in a new round of funding, led by DST Global. Baillie Gifford, a fund managed by BlackRock, Sands Capital Ventures and Temasek, also participated in the round, which the company will use to consolidate its U.S. and U.K. markets and fuel further growth. Launched in 2010, Funding Circle allows qualified individual investors and institutions to invest in small businesses looking for growth capital. Investors using the company's platform are on track to lend $1 billion over the next year. "Today's capital injection will allow us to accelerate efforts in the United States and help us better serve the 28 million Main Street small businesses many banks have left behind," said co-founder Sam Hodges, the company's U.S. managing director. "This year, we'll continue to invest heavily in technology and talent." Funding Circle also has named Chitra Nayak as its U.S. COO and David Yu as its global chief product officer. Nayak is the former COO of platform at Salesforce, and Yu is the former CEO and CTO of Betfair.
