o Mountain View-Based Google Launches New Wireless Service

Mountain View, Calif. -- Taking aim at market leaders AT&T and Verizon Wireless, Mountain View-based Google on Wednesday unveiled a new wireless service called Project Fi. The service will charge customers a flat rate of $20 a month for talk, text, Wi-Fi connections and international coverage, plus an additional $10 a month per GB of cellular data. The company said it will credit customers for the value of their unused data. Google is now taking signups for early access to the program, which initially will only be available through the Nexus 6 smartphone that the company developed with Motorola. The service allows calls to seamlessly transition from Wi-Fi to cell networks, and lets users talk and text with their phone number on just about any phone, tablet or laptop. "Project Fi enables us to work in close partnership with leading carriers, hardware makers, and all of you to push the boundaries of what's possible," wrote Nick Fox, Google's vice president of communications products, in a blog post. "By designing across hardware, software and connectivity, we can more fully explore new ways for people to connect and communicate." Google is partnering with Sprint and T-Mobile to launch Project Fi in the U.S.

o San Francisco-Based Zirx Raises $30 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- Zirx, a San Francisco-based provider of on-demand valet and car services aimed at vehicle owners in major cities, said on Wednesday it has raised $30 million in its second round of funding, led by Bessemer Venture Partners. Previous backers Norwest Venture Partners and Trinity Ventures also took part in the round, which the company will use to accelerate its expansion efforts into new markets and continue to develop the service and platform. The company now has raised $36.4 million since its inception last year. Zirx's mobile app allows users to request an agent, who will meet them at their location within minutes and park their car in a secure garage. While parked, customers can opt for a gas fill-up, a car wash and other services through the app. When they are ready to leave, their car can be delivered to a requested location. Zirx first launched its service in San Francisco last June, and since has expanded to Los Angeles, Seattle and Washington. Several new cities are set to launch in the coming weeks. Ethan Kurzweil, a partner at Bessemer, has joined the company's board of directors.

o Report: Google Spent Record $5.47 Million on Q1 Lobbying

Mountain View, Calif. -- Google spent a record $5.47 million on lobbying during the first quarter, the most among 16 tech and communications companies analyzed by public interest group Consumer Watchdog, based on disclosures filed with the Clerk of the House of Representatives. The figure is up 43% from the same quarter in 2014 for Mountain View-based Google, which is currently battling antitrust charges in Europe. Meanwhile, Comcast, which is seeking approval from the FCC and Justice Department for its proposed merger with Time Warner Cable, spent $4.62 million, up 50%, and lobbying spending at Amazon soared 130% to $1.91 million. The increases come as the majority of tech companies, including Menlo Park-based Facebook and Microsoft, slightly trimmed their lobbying budgets.
