o S.F.-Based Loop Commerce Raises $16 Million in New Funding

San Francisco -- Loop Commerce, the San Francisco-based developer of a web-based platform for e-commerce gift giving, said on Tuesday it has raised $16 million in a new round of funding, increasing its total backing to $30 million. This round was led by Oren Zeev, along with Dan Tierney and Stephen Schuler through Wicklow Capital. Loop said it will use the new funds to accelerate growth, including the hiring of new employees across its engineering, data, sales and marketing, product and design teams. Loop's e-gifting software integrates with retailers' online stores and backend systems to allow online customers to select and send gifts. The company's platform is currently used by retailers such as Macy's, Lancôme, Urban Decay, Diane von Furstenberg, Johnny Was, Relax the Back and Thomas Dean.

o San Francisco-Based Bigcommerce Acquire Zing

San Francisco -- Bigcommerce, the San Francisco-based developer of an ecommerce platform for brands, said on Tuesday it has acquired Texas-based Zing, a developer of mobile retail technologies. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Zing's employees and intellectual property will become part of Bigcommerce, expanding the company's omnichannel retail capabilities and accelerating partnerships with point-of-sale providers such as Square, Lightspeed and NCR Silver. Bigcommerce said the acquisition will allow it to make available APIs and technologies for retailers, such as the ability to enable real-time inventory sync between online and physical stores, in-store pickup and dynamic order management.

San Francisco -- Francisco Partners, the San Francisco-base dprivate equity firm focused on the technology sector, said on Tuesday it will acquire Massachusetts-based HealthcareSource, a developer of talent management software for the healthcare industry. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 1992 and backed by Bulger Capital Partners and Insight Venture Partners, HealthcareSource has more than 2,300 healthcare clients. The company's software is designed to help healthcare organizations acquire, develop and retain the best workforce possible. President and CEO Peter Segall will continue to lead HealthcareSource following the transaction.

o Google Commits $162 Million to European News Organizations

Mountain View, Calif. -- Google on Tuesday announced plans to spend approximately $162 million to "support high quality journalism through technology and innovation" in Europe. The company unveiled its Digital News Initiative (DNI), a new partnership with eight European news publishers, including The Guardian and The Financial Times. "The goal is to encourage a more sustainable news ecosystem -- and promote innovation in digital journalism -- through ongoing collaboration and dialogue between the tech and news sectors," Google said in a statement. The Mountain View-based company said that anyone involved in Europe's digital news industry will be able to take part in the DNI's programs. Google, which has had a tumultuous relationship with several European news publishers in recent years, is currently facing antitrust charges in Europe.

o San Jose-Based NanoTech Entertainment Acquires UpLink.to

San Jose, Calif. -- NanoTech Entertainment, a San Francisco-based technology company focused on several aspects of the entertainment industry, said on Tuesday it has acquired mobile app developer UpLink.to. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. UpLink.to's products, including PhotoUpLink and VideoUpLink, will become NanoTech-branded products and sold under the NanoTech Communications label. And company founder Mark Morris will become the president of NanoTech's Communications mobile app unit. "We've worked with Mark for many years and having the UpLink.to team become part of the NanoTech family is a natural fit," said NanoTech Chairman Jeff Foley.
