o Incubator 1776 to Acquire San Francisco-Based Startup Hub The Hattery

San Francisco -- 1776, a Washington, DC-based startup incubator and seed fund, said on Wednesday it will expand to the West Coast by acquiring The Hattery, a San Francisco-based startup hub focused on design and culture. Financial terms of the cash and stock deal were not disclosed. "The opportunity to bring Hattery and 1776 together to build a bridge between San Francisco and Washington is an important step as we build a truly global network," said 1776 co-founder Donna Harris. "Washington, DC is home to the world's most important leaders, and San Francisco is the heart of the startup movement. By combining the resources, networks, and intellectual capital of both cities, we're in a stronger position than ever." Hattery co-founders Josh Mendelsohn, Joshua To and Luis Arbulu will join 1776 as advisers. The acquisition gives 1776 approximately 1,200 companies in its global network, as well as 38 full-time employees and 650 outside mentors. The Hattery, which bills itself as "a community of entrepreneurs building products and technologies that will make a positive impact on the world," will continue to operate under its own name in San Francisco, where members of 1776 will be able to use office space and other resources.

o San Mateo-Based Vuru Raises $1 Million in Seed Funding

San Mateo, Calif. -- Vuru, the San Mateo-based developer of a free stock analysis platform, said on Wednesday it has raised $1 million in a new round of seed funding, led by Tim Draper of Draper Associates and DFJ. Naveen Jain and Sony Mordechai also participated. Founded by 21-year old Niles Lawrence, Vuru is the developer of an analysis engine designed to gather 10 years of complex financial data, analyze it and present it in easy-to-understand visual reports. The company said its technology helps reduce the steep learning curve typically associated with investing. "When I first started investing I was interested in purchasing Apple's stock, but I had no idea how to even begin trading stocks," said Lawrence, the company's president and CEO. "If we can make a device as sophisticated as an iPad easy for even a 2-year-old to use, why can't we do the same with investing?"

o Report: Cyber Threats on Gov't Networks 16 Days Before Detected

Alexandria, Va. -- Cyber threats live on government networks for an average of 16 days before they are detected, according to a new report by  MeriTalk. And although 86% of government cybersecurity professionals say big data analytics can help improve their efforts, just 28% currently are fully leveraging big data for security purposes. Nine out of 10 respondents say they can't tell a "complete story" with the cyber security data they receive. As a result, 76% say their security teams often operate reactively rather than proactively. "Government organizations have access to a wealth of cyber threat information," said Kevin Davis, the public sector area vice president at Splunk, which underwrote the report. "The challenge is managing that data and connecting the dots in real time. That’s how we get immediate insight into threats. Agencies need to detect threats faster and start to predict when and how they will occur." The report, available through the top link below, examines the state of cyber security in federal, state and local government agencies, and identifies steps to help these organizations see better security outcomes.

o Carlyle's Rubenstein Donates $5.4 Million to Restore Iwo Jima Memorial

Washington, DC -- David Rubenstein, the co-CEO of  private equity giant The Carlyle Group, has donated $5.37 million to restore and improve the Iwo Jima memorial and its surrounding parkland in Arlington, Va. The funds will allow the National Park Service to re-gild the engravings on the sculpture's pedestal, wax the sculpture and improve lighting, landscaping and infrastructure. It also will go toward enriching educational materials and park signs, which teach visitors about the significance and importance of the memorial. Rubenstein is no stranger to large-scale donations to the government. Last fall, he gave $5 million to help revitalize the White House Visitor Center. In 2010, he also gave $10 million to establish the David M. Rubenstein National Center for White House History at Decatur House, in 2012 donated $7.5 million to repair the earthquake-damaged Washington Monument and in 2013 gave another $10 million to George Washington's Mount Vernon to support the construction and endowment of a library.
