o In Move Against Uber and Lyft, DC Taxi Union Files Class Action Lawsuit

Washington, D.C. -- As part of a protracted battle with leading ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft, the D.C. taxi drivers union last week filed a class action lawsuit against the District of Columbia over what it calls an "unfair, two-tiered system" for taxis. In a statement, the Metro Area Taxi Operators said that the District government "gives a competitive advantage to ride services like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar over taxi operators." The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia by D.C. taxi drivers and their taxi association, which is affiliated with Teamsters Local 922. The class action alleges that the D.C. Council violated the rights of due process and equal protection of taxi drivers when it enacted the "Vehicle-for-Hire Innovation Amendment Act of 2014" that regulates ride-sharing services. "D.C. taxi drivers are held to stringent licensing requirements, regulations, restrictions and costs for operating taxi services that are not required of ride service providers under the legislation," the union wrote.
