o San Francisco-Based AltSchool Raises $100 Million for Expansion

San Francisco -- AltSchool, a San Francisco-based network of technology-focused micro-schools founded by former Google executive Max Ventilla, said on Monday it has raised $100 million in a new round of funding, co-led by Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz. Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan's donor-advised fund at Silicon Valley Community Foundation also took part, as well as Emerson Collective, First Round Capital, Learn Capital, John Doerr, Harrison Metal, Jonathan Sackler, Omidyar Network and Adrian Aoun. This round also includes a new debt facility to fund school expansion. AltSchool launched its first micro-school in San Francisco in 2013, and currently operates four schools in the Bay Area, each supported by a proprietary technology platform. New locations are scheduled to open next fall in San Francisco, Palo Alto and Brooklyn. Since raising $33 million in its first round of funding last year, the company's staff has nearly quadrupled, from 30 to 115 employees. Ventilla is the former head of personalization at Google and the co-founder of Aardvark, a search company that Google acquired in 2010.

o SurveyMonkey CEO Dave Goldberg Dies Suddenly at Age 47

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Dave Goldberg, the CEO of Palo Alto-based SurveyMonkey and husband of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, died suddenly Friday night. He was 47. "We are deeply saddened to announce that Dave Goldberg passed away suddenly last [Friday] night," wrote Bennett Porter, SurveyMonkey's vice president of marketing communications. "Dave's genius, courage and leadership were overshadowed only by his compassion, friendship and heart. His greatest love was for his family. Our sympathy goes out to them and to all who were touched by this extraordinary man. We are all heartbroken." Goldberg had been with the company since 2009. Earlier in his career, he founded LAUNCH Media, leading the company until its acquisition by Yahoo in 2001. Following the sale, he served as the vice president and general manager of Yahoo Music, and later spent two years as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Benchmark Capital. "In lieu of donations, we want to celebrate his life in a manner that respects the family's privacy as they cope with this tragic, life changing event: Sheryl, their children, and our family would be grateful if people would post their memories and pictures of Dave to his Facebook profile," his brother, Robert Goldberg posted on Facebook.
