o Oakland-Based Lucid Raises $14.2 Million in Second Round

Oakland -- Lucid, an Oakland-based developer of cloud-based software used for the integrated management of commercial buildings, said on Thursday it has raised $14.2 million in its second round of funding, which the company will use to expand its software capabilities. Investors included GE Ventures, Formation 8, Zetta Venture Partners and Autodesk. Lucid plans to use the proceeds to accelerate key platform capabilities of its cloud operating system, BuildingOS, which connects more than 160 hardware and software building technologies within a single interface. The company also plans to expand its suite of enterprise apps, including new tools for finance, building operations and facilities teams, as well as management of multi-tenant real estate. "We believe that the buildings industry is overdue for transformation and that interoperable and easy-to-use software is the key to unlock tremendous opportunities," said CEO Vladi Shunturov. Along with the funding, the company said it recently has hired several key executives, including: Shelly Davenport (vice president of worldwide sales), Loreal Lynch (vice president of marketing), Nate Nilles (vice president of business development), Aaron DeYonker (vice president of product) and Sitar Mody (senior director of engagement programs).

o Microchip Technology to Acquire San Jose-Based Micrel

San Jose, Calif. -- Microchip Technology, an Arizona-based chipmaker, said on Thursday it will pay $744 million to acquire San Jose-based Micrel, a maker of chirps for the analog, Ethernet and high-bandwidth markets. Under the deal, Micrel shareholders can elect to take either $14 a share in cash or Microchip stock. "Micrel's portfolio of linear and power management products, LAN solutions and timing and communications products, as well as their strong position in the industrial, automotive and communications markets, complement many of Microchip's initiatives in these areas," said Steve Sanghi, the president and CEO of Microchip Technology. Micrel in January formed a special committee to explore possible alternatives for the company, including its potential sale.

o San Francisco-Based Doblet Raises $1.3 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Doblet, a San Francisco-based phone-charging startup, said on Thursday it has raised $1.3 million in a round of seed funding, led by SoftTech VC. The news comes days after the company launched a network of batteries for charging phones across San Francisco. Customers can use the company's mobile app to find the nearest Doblet-carrying locations, which currently exist at more than 100 area cafes, bars and restaurants. The company plans to expand that number to more than 1,000 in the coming months, adding them at a rate of 30 a week. "Most people don’t like to carry charging cables, or enjoy remembering to keep their external batteries charged," said co-founder and CEO Doktor Gurson. "Most venues don’t have phone battery chargers on hand. And electrical outlets are in limited supply and often difficult to find. Our vision is to have doblets on nearly every city block, so consumers will always have an easy way to charge their phones while they're out and about."
