San Francisco -- Dick Costolo will step down as the CEO of San Francisco-based social media giant Twitter at the end of this month, the company announced late Thursday. The company's board has named Jack Dorsey, Twitter's co-founder and chairman, as its interim CEO, while it searches for a permanent successor. Dorsey also will continue to serve as the CEO of Square, the payments and financial services company he co-founded in 2009. "I am tremendously proud of the Twitter team and all that the team has accomplished together during my six years with the company," said Costolo. "I am deeply appreciative of the confidence the board, the management team and the employees have placed in me over the years, and I look forward to supporting Twitter however I can going forward."

o Pleasanton-Based Blackhawk Network to Acquire Achievers Corp.

Pleasanton, Calif. -- Blackhawk Network, the Pleasanton-based operator of a prepaid and payments network, said on Thursday it will acquire San Francisco-based Achievers Corp., developer of an employee recognition and rewards platform. Financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close by June 30, were not disclosed. Blackhawk said the acquisition will broaden the reach of its incentive and engagement business. Achievers' cloud-based platform is designed to increase employee engagement through social recognition and rewards. The platform lets employees recognize each other in real time from any desktop, mobile or tablet device.

o ViaSat Acquires San Jose-Based Engreen

San Jose, Calif. -- ViaSat, a Carlsbad-based provider of broadband and communications services, said on Thursday it has acquired San Jose-based Engreen, a developer of network virtualization technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. ViaSat said the acquisition will add management flexibility for its global satellite-ground system. "Our investment in Engreen reinforces our commitment to the global Ka-band satellite market," said Kevin Harkenrider, ViaSat's senior vice president of commercial networks. "This transaction will enhance our ability to rapidly create, deploy and manage services in our Flexible Broadband System."

o Menlo Ventures Names Matt Murphy as Managing Director

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Menlo Ventures, the Menlo Park-based venture capital firm, on Thursday named Matt Murphy as a managing director. Murphy, who departed Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers earlier this year, becomes one of seven investing partners at the firm. While at Kleiner Perkins, Murphy started the KP iFund in collaboration with Apple, and was a board observer at Google. His investments include AutoNavi, Aerohive Networks, Drawbridge, Simplivity, AppDynamics and Shazam. "Matt is the perfect fit to expand our partnership in core areas of investment such as mobile apps and data center infrastructure," wrote Managing Director Mark Siegel in a blog post.

o California Near Top of List for Job-Loving Comments on Twitter

Weston, Mass .-- People in California are among the most active in the nation when it comes to tweeting about their job satisfaction, according to a new study by Monster and Brandwatch. California ranks fourth, behind only Hawaii, Utah and Oregon in the ratios of people discussing hating their job vs. loving their job on Twitter.
