o Menlo Park-Based DCM Ventures Raises $100M for New Android Fund

Menlo Park, Calif. -- DCM Ventures, an early stage venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, said on Thursday it has raised $100 million for its second fund focused on startups developing tools for Android mobile devices. The fund, known as A-Fund II, follows the firm's initial Android-focused fund, which has made investments in companies such as Augmedix, Freee, KakaoTalk, Kuaishou, Life360, Playstudios, Eaze and Yik Yak. "When we raised the first A-fund in early 2011, Android was still a risky minor platform, but today it is the most dominant in terms of openness, innovation and units sold," said David Chao, co-Founder and general partner at DCM Ventures. "Our mission is to continue to find unique mobile-first startups in this ecosystem and explore next generation platforms in new services, VR and wearables." The geographic focus of A-Fund II, like the original A-Fund, will be in the U.S. and Asia.

o Redwood City-Based Outpost Games Lands $6.2 Million in First Round

Redwood City, Calif. -- Outpost Games, a Redwood City-based video game startup focused on the growing audience of millennials watching games on the Internet, said on Thursday it has landed $6.2 million in its first round of funding, led by Benchmark. Mitch Lasky, a general partner at Benchmark, and angel investor Manuel Bronstein, the head of consumer products at YouTube, have joined the company's board of directors. Outpost Games is the brainchild of game development veterans from Electronic Arts and Zynga who've created games in the Dead Space franchise, Farmville 2 and other titles for consoles, PC, mobile and social. The company said it plans to rethink game design by creating games that attract Internet viewers and allow them to interact with players. "A whole generation of gamers is growing up watching games as linear entertainment," said co-founder and CEO Sachin Pansuria. "Games like Minecraft and League of Legends garner billions of views on YouTube and Twitch, but the most popular games are incredibly difficult to watch for anyone but the most seasoned gamers."
