o Report: Rise of Mobile Internet Key to Closing Global Digital Divide

Reston, Va. -- The rise of the mobile Internet is playing a key role in closing the digital divide around the world, though challenges still remain, according to a new report from the Internet Society, an organization focused primarily on Internet policy. All told, 94% of the world's population now is covered by a mobile network, with hundreds of millions of people relying on it as their primary, if not only, means of accessing the Internet. Still, the report found affordability and lack of relevant content to be major barriers to Internet access. Despite its availability, just 28% of the global population has subscribed to mobile Internet services. "There are numerous countries for which the cost of mobile Internet service is more than 5% or even 10% of average per capita income," according to the report. "Further, while a significant segment of the population can access and afford the mobile Internet, they do not yet have enough interest to begin using it."
