o Mountain View-Based Confluent Raises $24 Million in Second Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- Confluent, the Mountain View-based developer of a platform designed to help organizations make better use of vast amounts of real-time data, said on Wednesday it has raised $24 million in its second round of funding, led by Index Ventures. Previous backer Benchmark also took part in the round, which increased the company's total funding to $31 million since its inception late last year. Mike Volpi, a partner at Index Ventures, has joined the company's board of directors. Confluent was founded by the creators of Apache Kafka, which initially was designed to help LinkedIn cope with the very large data ingestion and processing requirements. Confluent said it will use the latest funding to bolster product development, adding new stream data management features to Kafka and the other elements of its platform.

o Capital One Acquires Digital Design Studio Monsoon

Oakland -- Capital One, the Virginia-based banking and credit card giant, said on Wednesday it has acquired Oakland-based Monsoon, a provider of digital design and marketing services. Financial terms of the deal, which bolsters the company's presence in the Bay Area, were not disclosed. Monsoon will join Capital One Labs, the company's internal team of product developers and designers. "There are few spaces as ripe for technology-led disruption as how people relate to their money," said Rob Alexander, Capital One's chief information officer. "We worked closely with Monsoon for six months leading up to this day building out brand new iOS, Android and web development. Those six months helped build a relationship that helped us get aligned on mutual values and goals."

o Microsoft to Cut 7,800 Jobs, Take $7.6B Write-Down on Phone Business

Redmond, Wash. -- Continuing to struggle in the phone hardware market, Microsoft said on Wednesday it plans to cut up to 7,800 jobs and take a $7.6 billion write-down on its Nokia handset business. "We are moving from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem including our first-party device family," wrote CEO Satya Nadella in an email to employees. "In the near-term, we'll run a more effective and focused phone portfolio while retaining capability for long-term reinvention in mobility." The vast majority of cuts are expected to take place by the end of this year, and the company is expected to take a one-time restructuring charge of $750-$850 million. Microsoft acquired Nokia's mobile phone business last year in a deal valued at $9.4 billion, but its Windows phones have struggled to gain traction in a market dominated by iPhones and Android devices.

o Open-Source Software Project at UC Berkeley, Cal Poly Lands $6 Million

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Three foundations have pledged a total of $6 million over the next three years to support an open-source software project at UC Berkley and Cal Poly. Project Jupyter, as it is known, supports scientific computing and data science across a wide range of programming languages through an open, public community. Fernando Perez of UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Brian Granger of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo will lead the project at their institutions, after previously teaming to develop IPython, a popular user interface for interactive computing. Together, they hope to expand and improve the capabilities of the Jupyter Notebook, a web-based platform that allows scientists, researchers and educators to combine live code, equations, narrative text and rich media into a single, interactive document. Jupyter is currently used by more than 1 million people, including those who analyze massive gene sequencing datasets, process images from the Hubble Space Telescope and develop models of financial markets.
