o Redwood City-Based Carbon3D Lands $100 Million in Funding

Redwood City, Calif. -- Carbon3D, a Redwood City-based developer of 3D printing technology, said on Thursday it has raised $100 million in a new round of funding led by Google Ventures. New investors Yuri Milner, Reinet Fund and F.I.S., as well as previous backers Sequoia Capital, Silver Lake Kraftwerk and Northgate Capital also participated. Carbon3D's Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) technology is designed to address the current speed, mechanical properties and material choice limitations of the 3D printing industry, eventually allowing companies to produce commercial-quality parts through 3D printing. Early customers have come from the automotive, consumer electronics, aerospace, athletic apparel and industrial products industries. "Carbon3D's technology has the potential to dramatically expand the 3D printing market beyond where it stands today and reshape the manufacturing landscape," said Andy Wheeler, a general partner at Google Ventures. To date Carbon3D, which was formed in 2013 in North Carolina, has received $141 Million in funding.

o CloudBolt Software Moves HQ from Maryland to Campbell

Campbell, Calif. -- CloudBolt Software, developer of a cloud delivery platform, said on Thursday it has moved its corporate headquarters from Maryland to Campbell, while also securing $2 million in new funding. The three-year-old company, which will maintain a "substantial" sales and engineering team in Rockville, Md., said the move will help it "meet increasing demand" for its core platform. The funding, from new and previous backers, including B7, will help the company accelerate its sales, marketing and development efforts. In addition, CloudBolt said it plans to grow its sales and marketing teams fourfold, and has named Ephraim Baron as its director of marketing and Brian Kelly as its director of sales. Baron previously held senior management positions at Equinix, EMC, Microsoft and Jasper, while Kelly held enterprise sales roles at IronKey and Xerox. CloudBolt's core product is a platform that leverages existing IT resources and technologies to create a private or hybrid cloud environment in minutes.

o Survey: More Than a Third of Smartphone Owners Use Messaging Apps

Washington, DC -- More than a third of smartphone owners now use messaging apps such as Kik or iMessage, and another 17% use apps that automatically delete sent messages like Snapchat or Wickr, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center. The survey of more than 1,900 U.S. adults found the apps particularly popular among young adults, with nearly have of those ages 18-29 using messaging apps. The study also found that the number of online adults who use Pinterest and Instagram has doubled since 2012, to 31% and 28%, respectively. "The emergence of messaging apps is noteworthy as these communication tools serve different social needs than traditional online social networks," said lead author Maeve Duggan, a research associate at Pew. "The data also show how swiftly an already complex terrain of interaction is becoming more varied."
