o Mountain View-Based Kahuna Lands $45 Million in Second Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- Kahuna, a Mountain View-based developer of a communication automation platform designed to help brands better connect with customers through the web, email, mobile and social channels, said on Wednesday it has landed $45 million in its second round of funding. Tenaya Capital led the round, which also included participation from previous backers Sequoia Capital and SoftTech VC. Kahuna's core platform uses big data and machine learning to help businesses more intimately engage customers across multiple channels. "The rules for marketing have changed, and so have the technology requirements," said co-founder and CEO Adam Marchick, adding that the latest funding "will enable us to further build on the platform's capabilities to serve the evolving needs of our customers."

o Mountain View-Based castAR Raises $15 Million in First Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- castAR, a Mountain View-based augmented reality gaming startup previously known as Technical Illusions, said on Wednesday it has raised more than $15 million in its first round of funding. Playground Global led the round, which also included the company's seed investors. castAR previously completed a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013, attracting more than $1 million for its gaming system that provides holographic-like 3D images to users for an interactive gameplay experience. The company will use the new funding to continue product development efforts as it looks to drive adoption among tabletop and interactive game developers. It also plans to hire engineering, business and design talent, with an eye on a 2016 commercial launch. "People want a simple, accessible, fun solution that they can just pick up and play with their friends, without dealing with a bulky, uncomfortable headset, much less being tethered to a big computer," said CEO David Henkel-Wallace. "Our goal is to see castAR on store shelves across North America, aligned with some recognizable brands in tabletop and interactive gaming. Playground's support will help us get there."
