o San Francisco-Based Datameer Raises $40 Million in New Funding

San Francisco -- Datameer, the San Francisco-based developer of a big data analytics platform, said on Tuesday it has raised $40 million in a new round of funding, led by ST Telemedia (STT). Top Tier Capital Partners (TTCP), Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), Redpoint, Next World Capital, Software AG and Citi Ventures also took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to more than $76 million. Nikhil Eapen, ST Telemedia's chief strategy & investment officer and executive vice president, will join the company's board of directors. Datameer said it will use the additional capital to develop its teams across all business units, as well as to accelerate global expansion. Datameer was founded in 2009 with the aim of combining Hadoop with a spreadsheet interface, enabling business users to run analytics against very large data sets. The company now counts more than 200 customers, including Citi, Telefonica, Workday and VISA.

o Ximedica Acquires San Francisco-Based Bridge Design

San Francisco -- Giving the company a key West Coast hub, Rhode Island-based medical technology firm Ximedica said on Tuesday it has acquired San Francisco-based Bridge Design, a provider of design services for physical and digital products, including mHealth. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Bridge Design will continue operating out of its current office in San Francisco as a unit of Ximedica, allowing the company to expand offerings with existing clients while building new client relationships on the West Coast. "By joining forces with Ximedica, we will be able to respond to an increasing demand from our client base for a more comprehensive offering," said Bill Evans, the president of Bridge Design. Palo Alto, Calif. -- Norwest Venture Partners, the Palo Alto-based venture capital firm, said on Tuesday it has sold its majority stake in The Retail Equation, an Irvine-based provider of predictive analytics to retail businesses, to Kentucky-based Appriss. o Developers of RoboKiller App Named Winners of FTC Robocall Contest

Washington, DC -- A pair of mobile app developers from New Jersey have won first place in the Federal Trade Commission's contest to developer technology capable of blocking robocalls. Ethan Garr and Bryan Moyles claimed the $25,000 top prize in the FTC's "Robocalls: Humanity Strikes Back" competition for their RoboKiller app, which uses audio-fingerprint technology to identify and block robocalls on both landline and mobile phones. RoboKiller is currently in the midst of a KickStarter campaign, which seeks to raise $75,000 by Sept. 6. Runner-up Hemant Sengar, who won the runner-up prize of $10,500, applied similar audio analytics in his submission. "Their products may block billions of unwanted robocalls, and help people report illegal robocallers to law enforcement," said Jessica Rich, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection.
