San Francisco -- RelayRides, the San Francisco-based operator of a peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace, said it has acquired SocialStudio, a developer of social media apps that was backed by Trinity Ventures and Google Ventures. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. RelayRides said the acquisition will help accelerate customer acquisition and drive key areas of the business, including introducing dynamic pricing recommendations for car owners and expanding into new geographies and services. SocialStudio CEO David Stewart will become RelayRides' vice president of business development. "The acquisition of SocialStudio brings a welcome infusion of new talent to RelayRides during an exciting period of growth," said CEO Andre Haddad. "While the SocialStudio team helps address some immediate needs, we continue to look for additional high-quality talent." RelayRides rents vehicles in more than 2,500 cities. The company has raised $53 million in funding from investors including Canaan Partners, Google Ventures, August Capital, Shasta Ventures and Trinity Ventures.

o Intel to Drop Out as Title Sponsor of Science Talent Search

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Intel, the Santa Clara-based chip giant, will step down as title sponsor of the annual Science Talent Search high school science competition beginning in 2017, the Society for Science & the Public said on Wednesday. The organization, which has run the event since its inception in 1942, said it is actively seeking a new sponsor to commit at least $6 million annually for a minimum of five years. It will mark just the third title sponsor in the event's 75-year history, following Intel (since 1998) and Westinghouse (for the 50 years prior). The competition annually receives more than 1,800 applications from high school seniors, who vie to become one of 300 entrants. From those, 40 finalists are selected to compete in a week-long competition in Washington, DC. This year, each of the three top winners received $150,000 in prizes.

o Lockheed Martin to Cut 500 Jobs in IS&GS Segment

Bethesda, Md. -- Responding to reduced government spending and increased competition, defense technology giant Lockheed Martin said on Wednesday it plans to cut approximately 500 jobs from its Information Systems & Global Solutions (IS&GS) segment, which has a significant presence in San Jose. The moves, which will include both voluntary and involuntary layoffs, are expected to be completed by mid-November. "We made these difficult decisions as part of our efforts to remain competitive in an extremely challenging environment where industry dynamics have shifted, customer budgets are constrained and competition has continued to escalate," said Sondra Barbour, the executive vice president of Lockheed Martin IS&GS. "Continuing to reduce our overhead costs, is expected to enable us to be a much leaner and more agile organization which is what is needed to compete effectively." IS&GS currently has about 24,000 employees and produced $7.8 billion in sales last year.
