o Thoma Bravo to Sell San Francisco-Based Embarcadero Technologies

San Francisco -- Thoma Bravo, a San Francisco-based private equity firm, said it will sell Embarcadero Technologies, a San Francisco-based developer of software for application and database development, to Houston-based Idera. Financial terms of the deal, expected to close in mid-October, were not disclosed. Thoma Bravo bought the company and took it private in 2007, and has since bolstered it through the acquisitions of CodeGear from Borland Software, AnyDAC from DA-SOFT and Raize Components.

o San Francisco-Based RiskIQ Acquires PassiveTotal

San Francisco -- RiskIQ, a San Francisco-based developer of technology that analyzes web and mobile assets to detect malware, said on Thursday it has acquired PassiveTotal to expand its portfolio into threat analysis. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The company said the acquisition will allow it to offer tools that help clients address existing threats present in their digital footprints, as well as the malicious infrastructures used to carry out attacks. Stephen Ginty, the co-Founder of PassiveTotal, said that RiskIQ "has the infrastructure, resources, and customer base to support our growing community of users and expand the use of our platform into the broader enterprise market. It was a natural fit."

o Worldwide Semiconductor Sales Dip in August; Still on Record Pace

Washington, DC -- Worldwide sales of semiconductors continued their downward trend in August, according to new figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Sales reached $27.7 billion for the month, down 0.5% from July and 3% than the same period in 2014. "The global semiconductor market has endured a slight softening of demand in recent months, which has combined with currency devaluation and regular market cyclicality to slow sales somewhat," said John Neuffer, president and CEO of the SIA. Still, year-to-date sales through August are higher than a year ago, when the industry set a record for sales.

o Report: Two-Thirds of Americans Now Use Social Media Sites

Washington, DC -- Nearly two-thirds of Americans now use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, up from just 7% in 2005, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center. And although social networking site usage has leveled off somewhat since 2013, there has been substantial growth in usage among some groups that weren't among the earliest adopters, including older Americans. Still, younger adults who have attended at least some college and have higher household incomes are most likely to use the sites. The complete report is available at the link below.
