o San Francisco-Based Segment Raises $27 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- Segment, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform for collecting customer data, said on Friday it has raised $27 million in its second round of funding, led by Thrive Capital. Previous backers Accel Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Jon Winkelried, the former president of Goldman Sachs, also participated. The company said it will use the latest funds to double its headcount from 50 to 100, add connections to popular data storage platforms and capture new types of customer data beyond in-app behavior. "The engineering burden of collecting and managing data prevents tons of companies from actually using it to make better product and marketing decisions," said co-founder and CEO Peter Reinhardt, adding that his company's API "empowers them to easily collect and structure their data." Will Gaybrick, the CFO of Stripe and a general partner at Thrive Capital, will joining the company's board.

o Dell in Talks to Acquire EMC; VMware Could be Spun Off

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Dell and partner Silver Lake are in advanced talks to acquire Massachusetts-based storage technology giant EMC in a deal that could be worth more than $50 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported. If the deal is consummated, which could happen as soon as next week, EMC's data center software unit, Palo Alto-based VMware, would be spun off as a publicly traded company, with Dell likely holding on to a controlling stake. Reuters reported that EMC is under pressure from activist investor Elliott Management to spin off VMware, and that a shareholder proxy battle will likely erupt if negotiations don't reach an agreement in the next couple weeks.
