o Dell to Acquire EMC for $67 Billion, Palo Alto's VMWare to Stay Public

Palo Alto, Calif. -- In the largest technology acquisition in history, EMC, the Massachusetts-based provider of IT infrastructure services, has agreed to be acquired by personal computer maker Dell for $67 billion. The deal for EMC is valued at $33.15 a share, which is a 28% premium over EMC's closing price before rumors about merger negotiations were leaked last week. Considered the biggest tech acquisition deal in history, the transaction will result in EMC going private, while its Palo Alto-based software subsidiary VMWare will continue trading publicly, according to published reports. Michael Dell, the founder of Dell, took the computer manufacturer private in 2013.

o San Francisco-based Twitter Cutting 8% of Workforce

San Francisco -- A week after naming company founder Jack Dorsey as its CEO, the social media network Twitter disclosed in a public filing on Tuesday that it will cut around 340 workers in its product and engineering departments. The move comes as Twitter faces stiff competition for ad revenue from FaceBook and Google and the company's shares have fallen by nearly 50% in the past twelve months. "We are moving forward with a restructuring of our workforce so we can put our company on a stronger path to grow," Dorsey said in that letter that was included in the filing to the SEC. Twitter's employee headcount has rapidly increased in recent years as a result of hiring and acquisitions and hiring. It currently has about 4,100 employees, an increase of more than 800 people, from a year ago.
