o San Mateo-Based Sierra Ventures Closes New $170 Million Fund

San Mateo, Calif. -- Sierra Ventures, an early-stage technology venture capital firm based in San Mateo, said on Thursday it has closed a new $170 million investment fund, its 11th overall. "Similar to Fund X, and with the same managing directors, we will continue to fund companies within the enterprise software, connected devices, and consumer marketplace sectors that address consumer and enterprise needs, while also exploring new, emerging technology sectors," said Mark Fernandes, one of three managing directors. The firm invested in 23 companies through its previous fund, which closed in 2012. Portfolio companies Bina Technologies, Nexgate, Social Touch, Tempo AI and Ximalaya were acquired over the past three years.

Redwood City, Calif. -- Two days after announcing its acquisition of interactive agency C.TRAC, Redwood City-based Pierry Software, a provider of software and services designed to help clients optimize their digital marketing campaigns, said on Thursday it has landed new investment from MDC Partners and Salesforce Ventures. Financial terms were not disclosed. Founder and CEO Josh Pierry said the funding will "help us scale our Marketing as a Service (MaaS) approach to clients globally." The company was founded in 2008, and currently has more than 75 employees.

o Pleasanton-Based Blackhawk Network Acquires GiftCards.com

Pleasanton, Calif. -- Blackhawk Network, the Pleasanton-based developer of a prepaid and payments network, said it has paid $120 million to acquire Pittsburgh-based GiftCards.com and its corporate site, OmniCard. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. GiftCards.com sells digital and physical prepaid gift cards to consumers, while OmniCard sells customized prepaid incentive and reward products to business clients. "We're excited to add another gift card website to our roster," said Talbott Roche, Blackhawk Network's president. "With GiftCards.com often ranking high in search engine results, this acquisition is expected to enhance Blackhawk's leadership in the gift card ecommerce market."

o Sunnyvale-Based ShoreTel Completes $8.5 Million Deal for Corvisa

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- ShoreTel, a Sunnyvale-based provider of hosted phone systems and unified communications tools, said on Thursday it has completed its $8.5 million acquisition of Milwaukee-based Corvisa, a provider of cloud-based communications tools, from Novation Companies. The deal was first announced last month. The company said the move will accelerate its hosted revenue growth. "The addition of Corvisa's standards-based APIs, SIP trunking and standalone contact center expands our cloud-based offering while providing new sources of hosted revenue," said Don Joos, the president and CEO of ShoreTel. Corvisa's leadership team and approximately 95 employees have joined ShoreTel.

o San Francisco to Host 2016 Challenge Cup Regional

San Francisco -- San Francisco will play host to one of eight regional rounds in the 2016 Challenge Cup, a global startup competition taking place in more than 50 cities worldwide, organizer 1776 said on Thursday. Other regionals will take place in Mexico City, Dubai, Nairobi, Tokyo, New York, Singapore and London, with the global finals set for June in Washington, DC. There, startups will compete for over $1 million in cash and equity prizes. Organizers also unveiled several new high-profile partners they hope will expand the event's reach. They include: Philips (focused on health technology), the DC Mayor's Office (focused on the Washington, DC competition), the World Bank (focused on cleantech), Amazon Web Services (a cloud technology partner), Inter-American Development Bank (regional partner for Latin America and the Caribbean), the Japan Innovation Network (regional partner in Japan) and AARP (focused on caregiving startups for people over 50 in San Francisco and New York).
