o Mountain View-Based Veniam Raises $22 Million in Second Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- Veniam, a Mountain View-based builder of vehicular networks created by turning vehicles into Wi-Fi hotspots and connecting them to each other and wireless infrastructure, said it has raised $22 million in its second round of funding. Verizon Ventures led the round, which also included participation from new investors Cisco Investments, Orange Digital Ventures and Yamaha Motor Ventures, as well as previous backers True Ventures, Union Square Ventures and Cane Investments. The company now has raised $27 million since its inception. Veniam said it will use the funding to expand its platform and deliver managed services over networks of connected vehicles to be deployed in urban fleets, ports, airports, factories and other transportation ecosystems in cities like New York, Singapore, Barcelona, and London. The company also plans to expand its teams in Silicon Valley, Portugal and Singapore. "Citywide mesh networks of connected vehicles and other moving things are a radically new concept and we are excited to support Veniam in enabling the smart cities of the future," said Ed Ruth, a manager at Verizon Ventures.

San Francisco -- L1, a Luxembourg-based investment firm, said on Friday it has invested $200 million in San Francisco-based on-demand ride service Uber Technologies, which the company will use to accelerate international expansion. "L1's knowledge of emerging markets will be crucial in helping us make cities more accessible, opening up more possibilities for riders and more opportunities for drivers," said Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. It's unclear whether the latest investment is part of the more than $2 billion Uber was seeking to raise at a valuation of $62.5 billion late last year.

San Francisco -- Life360, the San Francisco-based developer of a location-based mobile network for families, said on Friday it has acquired Mountain View-based Couple, developer of a mobile app designed to keep busy couples connected. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "We share a mission to better connect people with their loved ones," said Itamar Novick, the chief business officer at Life360. o San Jose-Based Immersion Sues Apple, AT&T for Patent Infringement

San Jose, Calif. -- Immersion, a San Jose-based developer of touch feedback technology, said on Friday it has filed both complaints with the International Trade Commission (ITC) and lawsuits in federal court alleging that Apple, AT&T and AT&T Mobility infringed on its technology patents. Specifically, the company said that Apple's iPhone 6 and Apple Watch infringe on patents covering touch (haptic) feedback systems and methods in electronic devices. "While we are pleased to see others in the industry recognize the value of haptics and adopt it in their products, it is important for us to protect our business against infringement of our intellectual property in order to preserve the ecosystem we have built and the investments that we have made in continuing to advance haptic experiences," said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas. "We will vigorously defend the intellectual property we have developed when it is infringed." In the ITC complaint, the company is seeking an order preventing the sale and importation of infringing Apple devices in the U.S. It also is seeking unspecified damages in its U.S. District Court suit.
