o Palo Alto-Based LiveAction Raises $36 Million in Second Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- LiveAction, the Palo Alto-based developer of an enterprise IT network visibility software platform, said on Tuesday it has raised $36 million in its second round of funding, led by Insight Venture Partners. Previous backers Accelerate-IT Ventures and Cisco Investments also took part in the round, which the company will use to expand operations globally and accelerate product development. Michael Triplett, managing director of Insight, and Phillip Vorobeychik, senior associate at Insight, will join the company's board of directors. Initially developed to aid the Department of Defense in the operation of its networks, LiveAction features a visual display, real-time big data analytics and deep integration with routers and switches. The combination is designed to simplify network management.

o Thoma Bravo Raises New $1 Billion Lower Middle Market Software Fund

San Francisco -- Thoma Bravo, the large private equity firm with offices in San Francisco and Chicago, said on Tuesday it has raised more than $1 billion for a new fund focused on lower middle market software investments. The firm said its Thoma Bravo Discover Fund will provide investments in situations requiring less equity capital than the larger opportunities that are the focus of its flagship funds. "Although earlier Thoma Bravo funds made many investments of the size targeted by the Discover Fund, the increasing scale of companies in the consolidating software and technology sectors has resulted in larger funds and larger investment sizes," said partner A.J. Rohde. "The [fund] is intended to allow our firm to continue to partner with great management teams at smaller, growing companies." Discover's first investment -- Infogix -- was announced on Jan.5.
