o Apple CEO Writes Letter Opposing FBI's Demand to Unlock iPhone

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple CEO Tim Cook on Wednesday published on open letter voicing his vehement opposition to a "demand" from the federal government for his Cupertino-based company to build a new version of its iPhone operating system that lets security officials access owners' personal data. Specifically, Cook said the FBI has asked the company to make a new version of the iOS that circumvents several key security features, and install it on an iPhone recovered during the investigation of December's terrorist attack in San Bernardino. Cook said that Apple has willingly complied with all of the FBI's requests for data, but that the latest demand simply goes too far. "We are challenging the FBI's demands with the deepest respect for American democracy and a love of our country," wrote Cook. "We believe it would be in the best interest of everyone to step back and consider the implications. While we believe the FBI's intentions are good, it would be wrong for the government to force us to build a backdoor into our products. And ultimately, we fear that this demand would undermine the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect."

San Francisco -- MindMaze, the Swiss developer of a multisensory computing platform with U.S. headquarters in San Francisco, said on Wednesday it has raised $100 million in a new round of funding, led by the Hinduja Group. Unspecified family offices also participated. The company, which had a pre-money valuation of more than $1 billion, said it will use the proceeds to continue building its medical-grade neural virtual reality platform combining virtual reality, computer vision, neuroscience, AI and haptics. The technology already has been commercialized for stroke and brain-injury survivors, with recent regulatory approvals in Europe and Asia. MindMaze now hopes to make it more broadly available through licensing, with the goal of powering virtual reality-optimized products for mainstream experiences. "This funding round is the first endorsement of the investment potential for the MindMaze platform and supports our vision to build the human interface," said founder and CEO Tej Tadi.
