o Mountain View-Based Nimble Collective Raises $8.5 Million in Funding

Mountain View, Calif. -- Nimble Collective, the Mountain View-based developer of a cloud-based platform that will let users develop and distribute their own animation content, said on Thursday it has raised $8.5 million in a new round of funding. New Enterprise Associates (NEA) led the round, which the company will use to further develop its core platform targeting an estimated 10 million professional and aspiring animators. Greg Papadopoulos, a venture partner at NEA, has joined the company's board of directors. "The animation content market generates $90 billion annually, yet millions of talented animators simply do not have access to the expensive studio-quality technology tools and big budgets currently required to bring high-quality creative projects to fruition," said Michael Howse, co-founder and investor in the company. "Nimble will change that by democratizing the market." Fellow co-founder Rex Grignon was most recently the founding head of character animation at DreamWorks Animation, where he oversaw all character animation for films including Madagascar 1, 2 and 3, Antz and Shrek. The company's platform is expected to be released in the second half of 2016.

o Palo Alto-Based Instart Logic Acquires App Acceleration Firm Kwicr

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Instart Logic, a Palo Alto-based developer of application delivery technology, said on Thursday it has acquired Massachusetts-based Kwicr, a maker of mobile app acceleration tools for Apple and Android platforms. Financial terms of the deal, which follows Instart Logic's $45 million fourth round of funding last month, were not disclosed. The company said the acquisition adds technology, a mobile delivery network software development kit and significant new analytics capabilities, in addition to an infusion of talent. It plans to open a new Boston office to accommodate the Kwicr team. "We approach content delivery from the lens of that wireless last mile -- the first impression an app makes on consumers," said CEO Manav Mital. "Kwicr is aligned in our vision of delivering fast content and focused on perfecting a seamless user experience."
