o Palo Alto-Based Vera Lands $17 Million in Second Round of Funding

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Vera, a Palo Alto-based developer of data protection and encryption technology, said it has raised $17 million in its second round of funding, led by Sutter Hill Ventures. Previous backers Battery Ventures and Amplify Partners also took part in the round, which the company will use to expand its sales and marketing capabilities and accelerate development of what it calls its Information Rights Management-as-a-Service platform. Vera, which now has raised $31 million since its inception, said the platform secures and tracks any type of digital information across all users, devices, applications, and platforms in real-time. Since its public launch in April 2015, Vera has added more than a quarter million users at Fortune 500 companies in the financial services, media and entertainment, manufacturing and technology sectors. Stefan Dyckerhoff, managing director at Sutter Hill, will join the company's board of directors.

o Tech Firms Wouldn't Face Criminal Penalties Under Encryption Bill

Washington, DC -- Companies that refuse to comply with court orders to decipher encrypted communications wouldn't face criminal penalties under new legislation now being proposed on Capitol Hill, The Wall Street Journal reported. Richard Burr (R., N.C.), chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, reportedly has been preparing legislation on the matter after Cupertino-based Apple earlier this week refused to help the FBI circumvent a password-protection system on the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino terrorists. People familiar with the matter said Burr had been considering criminal penalties, but has since dropped that idea. "We believe it would be in the best interest of everyone to step back and consider the implications," wrote Apple CEO Tim Cook in an open letter published on the company's website Wednesday. "While we believe the FBI's intentions are good, it would be wrong for the government to force us to build a backdoor into our products. And ultimately, we fear that this demand would undermine the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect."

o Sunnyvale-Based Yahoo Forms Independent Committee to Explore Options

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Two weeks after unveiling a $400 million cost-cutting plan, Sunnyvale-based Yahoo said on Friday that its board has formed an independent committee to evaluate strategic alternatives for the struggling company. The committee will recommend to the board whether any proposed transactions are in the best interests of the company and its increasingly impatient shareholders. "The board is thoroughly committed to exploring strategic alternatives while simultaneously supporting management and the employees in their implementation of Yahoo's strategic plan," said Chairman Maynard Webb. That plan, announced earlier this month, includes cutting 15% of Yahoo's workforce and selling off several of its "non-strategic" assets. The Sunnyvale-based company, which reported a net loss of $4.4 billion loss last quarter, said the plan aims to "simplify" its structure, narrowing its focus on "areas of strength." Plans also call for the closing of offices in Dubai, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid and Milan, and the separation of its $31 billion stake in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba. "Separating our Alibaba stake from Yahoo's operating business is essential to maximizing value for our shareholders," said CEO Marissa Mayer. "In addition to the reverse spin, there are strategic alternatives that could help us achieve the separation, while strengthening our business."

o Presidential Campaigns Help Drive Robocalls to Record Numbers in January

Irvine, Calif. -- With presidential campaign season in full swing, the number of automated robocalls broke a U.S. record in January, according to a new report by YouMail. Americans received an estimated 2.3 billion robocalls for the month, a 54.7% month-over-month increase. Atlanta had the most robocalled area codes per capita, with 36 calls received per person on average in the 404 area code. Baton Rouge 225 (31 calls per capita); Washington, DC 202 (25 calls per capita); Memphis 901 (20 calls per capita); and Macon, Ga., 478 (19 calls per capita) rounded out the top five. The company said that the figures may serve as a potential economic indicator for different metro areas, due to their high correlation with payment reminders and debt collections. YouMail generates the figures based on calls blocked or reported as spam by subscribers nationwide.
