o Tech Giants Line Up to Support Apple in Battle with Federal Government

Cupertino, Calif. -- Several Silicon Valley technology giants have lined up behind Cupertino-based Apple in its fight with the federal government over customer privacy. Google, Twitter and Facebook all have voiced support for Apple, which last week received a federal court order demanding that it build a new version of its iPhone operating system allowing the FBI to retrieve encrypted personal data from a device belonging to San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook. Tim Cook, the company's CEO, has thus far refused, saying that a "back door" into iPhones could potentially have devastating consequences to its user base. Now, other tech companies are standing behind that decision. "When we receive lawful requests from these authorities we comply," said Facebook in a statement, printed in USA Today. "However, we will continue to fight aggressively against requirements for companies to weaken the security of their systems. These demands would create a chilling precedent and obstruct companies' efforts to secure their products." Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted that he and his company "stand with @tim_cook and Apple (and thank him for his leadership)!" Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a separate statement that "forcing companies to enable hacking could compromise users' privacy" and set a "troubling precedent."

Pavilion, a developer of storage and data networking systems designed to offer improved performance and simplicity, raised $15 million in its round, led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Artiman, with SKTA also participating. eTopus, a mixed signal startup, raised an unspecified amount, led by Innopartners. eTopus and Pavilion were the first two startups to locate in the accelerator, and now have become the first to secure their next round of funding.

o Hercules Technology Growth Capital to Shorten Name to Hercules Capital

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Looking to grow beyond its roots in the technology industry, Palo Alto-based specialty financing firm Hercules Technology Growth Capital said on Monday it will change its name to Hercules Capital. The move will become official on Thursday. "We wanted a name that better reflects our strategic outlook and positions us to broaden our platform and to potentially pursue new opportunities," said Manuel Henriquez, the firm's chairman and CEO. "These opportunities may include expanding our product offerings to better meet the needs of our existing innovative portfolio companies, increasing our strategic partnerships, potentially adding new industries and growing our company through potential strategic acquisitions." Twelve-year-old Hercules, which historically has provided venture debt to technology companies, will continue to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "HTGC."
