o San Francisco-Based MasterClass Raises $15 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- MasterClass, the San Francisco-based developer of a digital learning platform featuring online classes taught by Dustin Hoffman, Serena Williams, James Patterson and Usher, said on Tuesday it has raised $15 million in its second round of funding. New Enterprise Associates (NEA) led the round, which follows a previously undisclosed $4.5 million first round led by Javelin Venture Partners and two seed rounds totaling $1.9 million both led by Harrison Metal. The company will use the latest funds to expand its roster of instructors, accelerate class production in new subject areas, add employees and bolster its technology. Rick Yang, a partner at NEA, will join the company's board of directors. "In less than a year the momentum and engagement among users has blown away our expectations," said co-founder and CEO David Rogier. "It's extraordinary to see that our completion rates are already higher than that of long-standing online learning platforms." MasterClass also announced the official launch of Kevin Spacey's acting class and the opening of pre-orders for Christina Aguilera's singing class. Each MasterClass includes 10-25 video lessons, interactive exercises, learning materials and workbooks, and is accessible from any device for $90.

As part of the investments, the Hong Kong-based company will develop mobile games, interactive entertainment and in some instances virtual reality content for the studios. "Asia is an enormous opportunity and challenge for Hollywood," said CEO Eric Tan, a former executive with Universal Pictures and Gameloft. o WSJ: Mountain View-Based Google to Shutter Comparison Shopping Site

Mountain View, Calif. -- After only one year in operations, Mountain View-based Google plans to shutter Compare, its comparison shopping site for mortgages, auto insurance and credit cards, The Wall Street Journal reported. Citing people familiar with the matter, The Journal reported that the site plans to begin winding down before terminating on March 23. o Public Siding with Government Over Apple in iPhone Privacy Dispute

Washington, DC -- The Justice Department is garnering more public support than Cupertino-based Apple in their exploding battle over mobile device privacy, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center. According to the survey, 51% of Americans now side with the federal government, which is demanding that Apple create a new version of its iPhone operating system that lets the FBI unlock the phone used by one of the suspects in the San Bernardino terrorist attacks. Just 38% support Apple, which has refused to comply with the order over customer privacy concerns. Eleven percent of the 1,002 adults surveyed did not offer an opinion. Interestingly, those supporting the government are split nearly evenly between Republicans (56%) and Democrats (55%). Smartphone owners also are more likely to say Apple should not unlock the iPhone.
