o Facebook Launches New Tool Letting Users Express More than "Like"

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Taking a cue from users yearning to express a greater range of reactions to Facebook posts than simply "Like," the Menlo Park-based social networking giant on Wednesday launched "Reactions," a new tool that lets users pick from a range of emojis expressing Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad or Angry. Users can access the tool by either holding down the Like button on mobile devices or hovering over it on desktops. "For more than a year we have been conducting global research including focus groups and surveys to determine what types of reactions people would want to use most," wrote Sammi Krug, a Facebook product manager, in a blog post. "We also looked at how people are already commenting on posts and the top stickers and emoticons as signals for the types of reactions people are already using to determine which reactions to offer." The company had been testing Reactions in select markets for the past year.

It also has licensed the rights to multiple immuno-oncology programs from Stanford University. o FTC Settles Complaint Against ASUS Over Security Flaws in Routers

Washington, DC -- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said on Tuesday it has settled charges against Taiwan-based computer hardware maker ASUS, after alleging that critical security flaws in the company's routers put the home networks of hundreds of thousands of consumers at risk. The FTC said that ASUS marketed its routers as including numerous security features that the company claimed could "protect computers from any unauthorized access, hacking, and virus attacks" and "protect [the] local network against attacks from hackers." Despite these claims, the complaint alleges that the company didn't take reasonable steps to secure the software on its routers. For example, the complaint alleges that hackers could exploit security bugs in the routers' web-based control panel to change any of its security settings without the consumer's knowledge. The FTC said that a number of other design flaws exacerbated these vulnerabilities, including the fact that the company set -- and allowed consumers to retain -- the same default login credentials on every router: username "admin" and password "admin." "Routers play a key role in securing those home networks, so it's critical that companies like ASUS put reasonable security in place to protect consumers and their personal information," said Jessica Rich, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. The settlement will require ASUS to establish and maintain a comprehensive security program subject to independent audits for the next 20 years.
