o FTC Approves Settlement with Oracle Over Java Updates

Redwood City, Calif. -- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said Tuesday it has approved its settlement with database software giant Oracle, resolving allegations that the Redwood City-based company deceived customers about Java software updates. The FTC alleged that Oracle was aware of significant security issues affecting older versions of Java SE, which is installed on more than 850 million personal computers. The issues allowed hackers to craft malware that could allow access to consumers' usernames and passwords for financial accounts, as well as other sensitive personal information. Under the settlement, first announced in December, Oracle will be required to notify consumers during the Java SE update process if they have outdated versions of the software, notify them of the risk of having the older software and give them the option to uninstall it.

Participants included Michael Kane, an early investor in SoFi, and Tom Palecek, founding partner at Summit Trail Advisors. The company said it also has launched a revamped platform that features more games and new playlists, which allow students to create and share study questions with their peers. o SBA Teams with Tech Giants to Help Small Businesses Go Digital

Washington, DC -- The Small Business Administration (SBA) said on Wednesday it has partnered with several tech heavyweights to form a new public-private coalition aimed at helping small businesses go digital. Through the Small Business Technology Coalition, tech giants such as Amazon, Box, Facebook, LegalZoom, Microsoft, Salesforce and Zenefits will team with the SBA to educate entrepreneurs about the resources and technology available to them. Areas of focus include online commerce and payment platforms, efficiency of back-office operations, productivity, cybersecurity protection, and improved customer service and shopping experiences. "This first of a kind public-private partnership will empower a new generation of entrepreneurs to build businesses that are ready to compete from day one," said SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet. A key element of the project will be an ongoing schedule of hosted knowledge-sharing sessions, designed to increase technology awareness on topics of interest to small businesses and entrepreneurs.
