o Justice Department Unlocks Shooter's iPhone, Ending Legal Battle

Washington, DC -- The Justice Department said it has found a way to unlock the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino shooters, ending its legal battle against Cupertino-based Apple, which had refused to help the government over privacy concerns. Apple had vehemently opposed the idea of creating a "back door" for the government to access the iPhone of Syed Rizwan Farook, fearing that the technology eventually would make it into the hands of hackers. That led the Justice Department to begin searching for an alternative method, which it apparently found earlier this month when it said that an outside party had demonstrated a possible way to crack the iPhone. The government has not released details about how it accessed the encrypted information. "The government has now successfully accessed the data stored on Farook's iPhone and therefore no longer requires the assistance from Apple Inc.," the government said in a court filing Monday.

o Redwood City-Based Pyze Emerges from Stealth, Raises $1.7 Million

Redwood City, Calif. -- Pyze, the Redwood City-based developer of a business intelligence platform for mobile app publishers, said on Tuesday it has emerged from stealth after raising $1.7 million in seed funding. Investors included DoubleRock and several angel investors in New York and the Bay Area. The company, which also has received nearly $500,000 from startup programs by Google and Microsoft, said it will use the latest funds for product development and commercialization. Pyze's Growth Intelligence platform is designed to help small app publishers maximize app growth and personalize engagement, helping them compete more effectively with larger incumbents. "A few large publishers have dominated the app stores and are reaping all of the profits, while the rest struggle with expensive, time-intensive tools that yield cryptic data and require experts to decipher it," said Dickey Singh, the company's co-founder and CEO. "Pyze Growth Intelligence brings the same sophisticated intelligence and marketing tools used by large app publishers to everyone, enabling them to personalize and automate relationship building."

"Adding advanced Property/Casualty predictive analytics functionality to our Data and Analytics products will enable carriers to make significantly better, faster decisions, leading to better outcomes for insurers and their policyholders," said Neil Betteridge, Guidewire's vice president of strategy.
