o San Francisco-Based Docker Acquires Stealthy Start-Up Conductant

San Francisco -- Docker, the San Francisco-based organization behind the open platform for distributed applications, said it has acquired Conductant, a stealth-mode startup focused on automating the process of deploying code at scale. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Conductant was co-founded by Bill Farner, who while at Twitter led a team that developed the scheduling system that became Apache Aurora. The system is responsible for management and scaling of microservices at Twitter, and is still used daily by more than 1,000 engineers across the company. "We formed Conductant with the mission of empowering teams everywhere to deploy and scale microservices with the kind of ease and efficiency that for a long time have been privy to only a handful of large Internet companies.," wrote Farner in a blog post. Farner and co-founders David Chung and John Sirois will join Docker's infrastructure group.

o Global Semiconductor Sales Off to Sluggish Start in 2016

Washington, DC -- Global chip sales are off to a sluggish start in 2016, according to new figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Worldwide sales of semiconductors reached $26.9 billion in January, down 2.7% from December and down nearly 6% from the same period in 2015. "Global semiconductor sales decreased in January across most regional markets and product categories, largely due to softening demand and lingering macroeconomic headwinds," said John Neuffer, president and CEO of the SIA. "Despite these challenges, modest market growth is projected for 2016, following essentially flat sales last year."
