San Francisco -- Side-stepping what could've been a serious threat to its business, San Francisco-based on-demand ride service Uber has settled a pair of class-action lawsuits filed against the company by its drivers. Under the deal, Uber will pay up to $100 million to drivers in California and Massachusetts, but will continue to classify all drivers as independent contractors instead of employees. In addition, drivers will be permitted to place signs in their cars soliciting tips from passengers. The company also said it will begin providing drivers with more information about their individual ratings and how they compare with peers. It also will introduce a new policy explaining when and how it deactivates drivers, and create an appeals process in California and Massachusetts. "We believe these to be very significant changes that will improve work conditions for Uber drivers," said plaintiffs attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan in a statement. "We realize that some will be disappointed not to see this case go to trial in June… But we believe the settlement we have been able to negotiate for Uber drivers throughout California and Massachusetts provides significant benefits -- both monetary and nonmonetary -- that will improve the work lives of the drivers and justifies this compromise result." https://newsroom.uber.com/growing-and-growing-up/ http://uberlawsuit.com/Breaking%20news%20-%20Uber%20will%20pay%20$100%20million%20to%20settle%20independent%20contractor%20misclassification%20claims.pdf (PDF) _____________________________________________ o San Mateo-Based SnapLogic Names James Markarian as CTO
