o San Francisco-Based Forter Lands $32 Million in Third Round

San Francisco -- Forter, the San Francisco-based developer of an automated fraud prevention platform designed to stop fraudulent online shoppers at the moment of checkout, said on Thursday it has raised $32 million in its third round of funding, led by Scale Venture Partners. Previous backers Sequoia Capital and New Enterprise Associates (NEA) also took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $50 million. Scale's Rory O'Driscoll has joined the company's board of directors. Forter's "Decision as a Service" fraud prevention technology provides instant approve/decline decisions for every e-commerce transaction, eliminating the need for rules, scores or manual reviews. The company, which has triples in size since launching in 2014, offers merchants a 100% fraud chargeback guarantee.

o Redwood City-Based Anomali Raises $30 Million in Third Round

Redwood City, Calif. -- Anomali, the Redwood City-based developer of a threat intelligence platform known until February as ThreatStream, said on Thursday it has raised $30 million in its third round of funding, led by Institutional Venture Partners (IVP). General Catalyst Partners, GV (formerly Google Ventures) and Paladin Capital Group also took part in the round, which raises the company's total funding to more than $56 million since its launch in 2013. Anomali said it will use the proceeds to support international expansion and product development, as well as to bolster its sales and marketing efforts. Steve Harrick, a general partner at IVP, has joined the company's board of directors. Anomali's platform makes it possible to correlate tens of millions of threat indicators against real time network activity logs and up to a year or more of forensic log data.

San Francisco -- Preempt Security, a San Francisco-based developer of technology designed to help companies combat malicious breaches and insider threats, said on Thursday it has raised $8 million in its first round of funding, led by General Catalyst Partners. Other participants included Mickey Boodaei and Rakesh Loonkar, the founders of Trusteer, and Paul Sagan, the former CEO of Akamai Technologies. The company said it will use the proceeds to expand its sales and marketing efforts, as well as accelerate product development. Additionally, Preemp has named Heather Howland, the former vice president of marketing at Lacoon Mobile Security, as its vice president of marketing.

o San Jose-Based PayPal Invests in Micro-Investing startup Acorns

San Jose, Calif. -- PayPal, the San Jose-based payment technology giant, said on Thursday it has invested in Irvine-based Acorns, developer of a micro-investing app, as part of the company's new $30 million funding round. Rakuten Fintech Fund and previous backers e.ventures and Greycroft Partners also participated in the round, which the company will use to expand its automated investment features. More than 850,000 people have opened investment accounts with Acorns since the app launched 20 months ago. The app is designed to make it easier for users -- particularly those between the ages of 18-34 -- to invest, rounding up daily purchases and automatically investing the difference into a portfolio of exchange-traded funds offered by asset managers such as Vanguard and BlackRock.

o Cryptosoft Acquires Fremont-Based DeviceAuthority

Fremont, Calif. -- Cryptosoft, a U.K.-based developer of authentication and encryption services for connected devices, said on Thursday it has acquired Fremont-based DeviceAuthority, a developer of M2M authentication technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The combined company, which also has received an undisclosed amount of financing co-led by Tern and Alsop Louie Partners, will operate under the Device Authority name. The two companies had been partnering since October, and already have integrated their technologies. Executive Chairman Albert Sisto said the merger will "expand our current product offerings and add an innovative patent portfolio of security technologies that adapt to the broad and evolving needs of the IoT marketplace."
