o Santa Clara-Based Intel to Cut Up to 12,000 Workers in Restructuring

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Moving away from its longtime focus on the personal computer market, Santa Clara-based chipmaker Intel said it plans to cut up to 12,000 employees -- about 11% of its workforce -- as part of a larger restructuring plan. The move, expected to be completed by mid-2017, also includes site consolidations and the re-evaluation of certain programs. The majority of layoffs will take place over the next 60 days, the company said. "These are not changes I take lightly. We are saying goodbye to colleagues who have played an important role in Intel's success," wrote CEO Brian Krzanich in an email to employees. "[This] announcement is about accelerating our growth strategy. And it's about driving long-term change to further establish Intel as the leader for the smart, connected world." Intel said the goal of the restructuring is to accelerate its evolution from a PC company to "one that powers the cloud and billions of smart, connected computing devices." The company expects to cut expenses by $750 million this year, with annual savings of $1.4 billion by mid-2017.

o Suitors Submit Bids for Yahoo; Verizon Seen as Leading Contender

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Potential suitors including Verizon Communications and U.K. publisher the Daily Mail have submitted bids to acquire the core Internet business of Sunnyvale-based Yahoo, The Wall Street Journal reported. Others reportedly included buyout firm TPG and an investor group including Bain Capital, Vista Equity Partners and former Yahoo CEO Ross Levinsohn, with private equity firms Silver Lake and Advent International also expressing significant interest. The New York Times reported that Verizon is seen as the leading contender for the assets. Most bids were in the range of $4-$8 billion, a person familiar with the matter told The Journal. A special committee of Yahoo's board now will evaluate the various options. The news comes as Yahoo reported an 11% drop in revenue to $1.09 billion and a net loss of $99.2 million in the first quarter.
