o Cupertino-Based Mist Raises $28 Million in Second Round of Funding

Cupertino, Calif. -- Mist, the Cupertino-based developer of a wireless platform for smart devices, said on Wednesday it has raised $28 million in its second round of funding, led by GV (formerly Google Ventures). Lightspeed Venture Partners, Norwest Venture Partners and Cisco Investments also took part in the round, which increased the company's total backing to $43 million. Karim Faris, a general partner at GV, has joined the company's board of directors. Mist said it will use the proceeds to expand its sales and marketing activities and bolster product development. "The latest round of financing will help us further our goal of delivering amazing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth experiences to the billions of people using smartphones, tablets and laptops," said co-founder and CEO Sujai Hajela.

o Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg Says Clinton Cabinet Not in Her Future

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg on Tuesday shot down persistent rumors that she was planning to join Hillary Clinton's cabinet if the Democrat won the White House, TechCrunch reported. "I'm staying at Facebook," said Sandberg, responding to a question at a Menlo Park conference about whether she would serve as the next Treasury or Commerce Secretary. "I really am staying at Facebook. I'm very happy." Sandberg has maintained close ties to the Clintons since getting her start in Bill Clinton's administration as chief of staff to then-Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. She joined Facebook in 2008.

o San Francisco-Based Serverless Lands $3 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Serverless, a San Francisco-based builder of developer tools for serverless infrastructure, said on Wednesday it has landed $3 million in a round of seed funding, led by Trinity Ventures. In addition, the company said it has brought the initial version of its framework out of beta. Serverless said its core framework is designed to help companies build web, mobile and IoT applications comprised of cloud services that scale automatically. Founder and CEO Austen Collins said the technology "is for building software with an extremely low total cost of ownership. That specific focus is what everyone is enthusiastic about." The year-old company, which so far has focused on event-driven compute services like AWS Lambda, said it plans to expand to other major cloud providers like Google, Azure and IBM.

Redwood City, Calif. -- Relievant Medsystems, a Redwood City-based medical device company using nerve ablation in the vertebrae to treat chronic lower back pain, said on Wednesday it has secured $36 million in a new round of funding, led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Canaan Partners, Emergent Medical Partners and Morgenthaler Ventures also participated. The company said it will use the proceeds to advance additional clinical studies, expand its product portfolio and accelerate commercial activities. "NEA is excited to continue its partnership with Relievant in bringing a game-changing technology to the millions of people who suffer from chronic low back pain," said NEA partner Justin Klein.

o Mountain View-Based Google Acquires FameBit

Mountain View, Calif. -- Google said it has acquired Santa Monica-based FameBit, a startup whose platform is designed to help brands find and work with content creators who have gained popularity on sites like YouTube. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Mountain View-based tech giant said the acquisition will help "creators of all sizes to directly connect with brands, as well as provide a great technology solution for companies like MCNs and agencies to find matches for their creators and brand partners." In a blog post, FameBit said it will continue to operate as a standalone company "for now." "With Google's relationship with brands large and small, and YouTube's partnership with creators around the globe, we hope to connect even more brands to creators, engage more audiences, and make brand marketing more creative and authentic than ever," wrote co-founders David Kierzkowski and Agnes Kozera.
