o San Francisco-Based Leanplum Raises $29 Million in Third Round

San Francisco -- Leanplum, the San Francisco-based developer of a mobile marketing platform, said on Tuesday it has raised $29 million in its third round of funding, led by Canaan Partners. Previous backers Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) and Shasta Ventures also participated in the round, which increased the company's total funding to $46.3 million since its launch in 2012. Leanplum said it will use the latest proceeds to expand its sales, marketing and engineering teams, as well as execute "aggressive" global expansion plans. Joydeep Bhattacharyya, who recently joined Canaan Partners, will return to the company's board of directors. Leanplum's platform is used by more than 100 brands, including Lyft, Macy's and Tinder, to generate more personalized and relevant connections with their users.

o Redwood City-Based Baobab Studios Raises $25 Million in Second Round

Redwood City, Calif. -- Baobab Studios, a Redwood City-based creator of virtual reality (VR) animation entertainment, said on Tuesday it has secured $25 million in its second round of funding. Horizons Ventures led the round, which also included participation from Twentieth Century Fox, Evolution Media Partners, China's Shanghai Media Group, Youku Global Media Fund and LDV Partners. They join the company's original investors, Comcast Ventures, HTC and Samsung. The company, which now has raised $31 million since its inception, said it will use the proceeds develop more animated VR movies and grow on a global scale. In addition, Baobab has named Larry Cutler as its chief technology officer (CTO). Cutler previously was Pixar's technical director on Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc., then became the global head of character technology for DreamWorks Animation. Baobab Studios was founded by Eric Darnell and Maureen Fan in 2015. Darnell is best known as director and screenwriter on all four films in the DreamWorks Madagascar franchise. Fan has held leadership roles in film, gaming and the web, most recently as the vice president of games at Zynga.

o San Francisco-Based Metamarkets Lands $14.25M Credit Facility

San Francisco -- Metamarkets, a San Francisco-based developer of interactive analytics used in programmatic marketing, said on Tuesday it has landed a new $14.25 million credit facility from Wellington Financial and City National Bank. The company will use the funds to expand its engineering team and bolster its real-time data processing infrastructure. "This capital will be directly invested in expanding the team and technology behind our real-time data processing infrastructure, which handles 100 times as many transactions each day as the New York Stock Exchange," said CEO Mike Driscoll. Metamarkets' investors include Khosla Ventures, Data Collective, IA Ventures, Village Ventures, True Ventures and Founder Collective.

o San Francisco-Based Pay By Group Raises $3.4 Million in Seed Round

San Francisco -- Pay By Group, the San Francisco-based developer of an e-commerce tool that lets people split the cost of any purchase, said on Tuesday it has landed $3.4 million in a new seed round, led by SparkLabs Global Ventures. Great Oaks Capital, 500 Startups, Payment Ventures, Amino Capital and Kima Ventures also participated, as well as several angel investors. Pay By Group was incubated at 500 Startups and CommerceInnovated, the accelerator run by MasterCard and Silicon Valley Bank. The company got its start working in the vacation rental industry by integrating with regional property management sites as an option for small groups to organize and split the cost of a beach or ski rental. Since then, it has grown to work with enterprise clients in the vacation rental vertical and other industries. "We're integrating on OTA sites both in the U.S. and abroad over the coming months," said co-founder and CEO Camilo Acosta.

San Francisco -- Comcast Ventures, the San Francisco-based venture capital arm of cable giant Comcast, on Tuesday named Dinesh Moorjani as managing director. Moorjani, who will be based in Santa Monica, most recently served as an executive-in-residence at Warburg Pincus, and previously was the founder and CEO of Hatch Labs, where he co-founded Tinder. In his new role, he will lead investments across various sectors, including data and business intelligence, marketplaces and social networks. "Dinesh brings unique experience that bridges later stage private equity transactions with an accomplished track record of angel investments," said Amy Banse, managing director and head of funds at Comcast Ventures.
