o San Francisco-Based Glu Mobile Acquires Crowdstar, Names New CEO

San Francisco -- Glu Mobile, the San Francisco-based developer of free-to-play games for smartphone and tablet devices, said it has acquired a controlling interest in Burlingame-based mobile and social gaming company Crowdstar in an all-cash deal that values the company at $45.5 million. Glu also announced that Niccolo de Masi will step down from his role as CEO to become executive chairman. Nick Earl, the company's president of global studios, has been named the new CEO. "By joining forces through this strategic and complementary transaction, we plan to leverage Crowdstar's valuable IP and veteran team, which is based right here in the Bay Area, to continue creating exciting cross-platform content that captures and resonates with even more users," said Earl. o Tech Companies Join Movement to Give Employees Off on Election Day

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Hoping to improve voter turnout, more than 300 tech companies have joined a movement that will give their employees off on Election Day. The companies, including several in the Bay Area, say the goal is to eliminate excuses for voters in an election seen as critical for the tech industry. "For example, the outcome of the immigration debate has significant impact on our ability to source talent," wrote Yuri Sagalov, the co-founder and CEO of Palo Alto-based AeroFS/Amium and part-time partner at Y Combinator. "Therefore, on November 8, 2016, we're giving our employees the day off so that they can fulfill their civic duty to vote without guilt or inconvenience. And we're calling on other technology companies to do the same."

o White House Outlines Plan for Social Media Transition

Washington, DC -- Years of President Obama's tweets and Facebook posts will remain accessible as part of a new social media transition plan outlined by the White House. While the official @POTUS Twitter handle will be made available to the new President on Jan. 20, retaining its more than 11 million followers, all of Obama's archived tweets will go under a newly created handle, @POTUS44, maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Those tweets also will be archived at NARA, where they will be preserved in the same manner as all other presidential records. The same will go for Twitter handles such as @WhiteHouse, @FLOTUS, @PressSec and @VP. Individual official accounts, like @KS44, will transition to NARA and continue to be accessible for the public to view as an archive. On Instagram and Facebook, the incoming administration will gain access to the White House username and followers, but will start with no content on its timeline. All content posted to the Obama White House Instagram and Facebook accounts will continue to be accessible at Instagram.com/ObamaWhiteHouse and Facebook.com/ObamaWhiteHouse. "We'll follow a similar approach with other official accounts on platforms including Medium, Tumblr, and YouTube," the White House wrote on its blog. A complete look at how the White House plans to handle this first-of-its-kind social media transition is at the link below.

o New Study Examines Alternatives to Silicon Valley Among Tech Hubs

Dallas -- What's the best alternative to Silicon Valley among the nation's technology hubs? That depends on what factors you value most, according to a new study by DataScience@SMU, the online masters in data science program from SMU. The organization compared eight cities considered "tech hubs" based on factors such as cost of living, job postings and office rentals. The findings vary. For instance, while New York City is the best in categories such as square feet of available office space, number of new companies, walkability and public transit, Raleigh-Durham boasts the lowest cost of living and highest number of job postings per 1,000 people. San Francisco has the highest cost of living, but also the highest per capital annual income and largest share of venture capital investment. And while Washington, DC has the highest corporate income tax rate, it also has the second highest percentage of residents with a bachelors degree or higher. The complete report is at the link below.
