o Sunnyvale-Based Datrium Raises $55 Million in Third Round

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Datrium, the Sunnyvale-based developer of an open convergence platform for private clouds, said on Monday it has raised $55 million in its third round of funding, led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Previous backer Lightspeed Venture Partners and another unnamed outside investor also participated in the round, which the company will use to bolster its sales, marketing, support and engineering activities. Datrium's flagship DVX data platform is designed to model public cloud infrastructure-as-a-service, eliminating the need for storage arrays, while integrating with multi-vendor enterprise infrastructure. "Our DVX is available for VMware today in the U.S. and Japan, and we are excited to broaden our reach with this new investment," said CEO Brian Biles. The company now has raised $110 million since its inception.

o Los Altos-Based Accompany Lands $20 Million in New Funding

Los Altos, Calif. -- Accompany, the Los Altos-based developer of a relationship intelligence platform designed to inform professionals about things they need to know about their key contacts, said on Monday it has raised $20 million in a new round of funding. Ignition Partners led the round, which also included participation from CRV. The company, which now has raised $40.6 million since its inception, said it will use the funds to continue developing its data platform and expand its teams in Los Altos and Portland, Oregon. "Since launch, we've been focused on the data platform and making sure our beta users have the best possible experience," said CEO Amy Chang. "As we scale and expand, so too must the team, so we're really excited about the prospect of more talented people joining Accompany." Available on iOS, the web and as a Gmail extension, Accompany's platform is designed to curate and intelligently manage users' networks and relationships. The platform integrates with a user's email, contacts, calendars and social and professional feeds, and scours publicly available sources to provide detailed briefings on meeting participants, news alerts about contacts and companies, and company profiles.

o White House Announces New Initiatives to Spur Computer Science Education

Washington, DC -- The White House on Monday announced several new initiatives aimed at bolstering computer science education in the U.S., including $20 million in investments from the National Science Foundation and plans for the development of a new education framework from the National Science and Technology Council. The efforts expand on a program called Computer Science for All, which aims to better prepare educators to teach rigorous computer-science courses and integrate computer science and computational thinking into their classrooms. In addition, the Department of Education's 21st Century Community Learning Centers will expand its STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) partnerships, reaching students at more than 200 sites across 25 states. The announcements come nearly a year after President Obama issued a call to action to give every child the opportunity to learn computer science, citing the availability of high-paying jobs, but a lack of computer science education in most schools.

o New Report Card Gives World Cybersecurity Readiness C-Minus

Columbia, Md. -- The world's overall cybersecurity readiness gets a grade of C-minus, according to a new assessment from 700 security practitioners in nine countries, compiled by Tenable Network Security. The average score of 70% on the Global Cybersecurity Assurance Report Card fell six points from a year ago, mainly due to a double-digit drop in the ability of respondents to assess cyber risk across 11 key components of the enterprise IT landscape. "It's pretty clear that newer technologies like DevOps and containers contributed to driving the overall score down, but the real story isn't just one or two things that need improvement, it's that everything needs improvement," said Cris Thomas, a strategist at Tenable. India scored the highest grade of any country in the report at 84%, followed by the U.S. (78%) and Canada (75%). Japan, at 48%, scored the lowest. The complete report is available at the link below.
