o Sunnyvale-Based Sift Raises $1.5 Million in Seed Funding

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Sift, the Sunnyvale-based developer of a free app designed to help consumers maximize credit card benefits and earn reimbursements, said it has raised $1.5 million in a new round of seed funding. Participants included Liquid 2 Ventures (Joe Montana's fund) and Plug and Play, as well as several individuals. The company, formerly known as ShopInBox, also said it has publicly released its iOS app. "In our beta testing, we have saved users hundreds of thousands of dollars and estimate users get back over 5% of their spend," said co-founder Abhinav Dubey. "This round of funding will help us grow our user base as well as continue to develop ways in which we can level the playing field for consumers." Sift said its service automatically analyzes lengthy credit card policies and files claims on behalf of users. The company said it can unlock hidden benefits, including price adjustment refunds, extended warranties and return protection for 90% of all credit cards in the U.S.

o Alarm.com Completes Deal for Two Units of Redwood City-Based Icontrol

Redwood City, Calif. -- Alarm.com, the Virginia-based developer of a platform that lets users monitor and control their properties from anywhere, said it has completed its acquisition of two business units from Redwood City-based Icontrol Networks. Financial terms of the deal, first announced in June, were not disclosed. The acquisition includes Connect, the Redwood City-based developer of an interactive security and home automation platform, and Canada-based Piper, developer of an all-in-one video and home automation hub. "The market for security-oriented connected home and connected business solutions continues to be attractive," said Steve Trundle, the president and CEO of Alarm.com. "These two business units will allow us to upsize our distribution channels and increase the scale of our research and development initiatives."

o San Francisco-Based Gusto Promotes Lexi Reese to COO

San Francisco -- Gusto, a San Francisco-based developer of payroll, benefits and human resources technology, said it has promoted Lexi Reese to chief operating officer (COO). Reese, the former vice president of global programmatic sales and strategy at Google, had been the company's chief customer experience officer. In her new role, she will oversee al of the company's marketing, sales, customer experience and insights and operations teams. Gusto, which also maintains offices in Denver, counts more than 40,000 small business customers. The company, formerly known as ZenPayroll, raised a $60 million funding round in 2015, led by Google Capital.

o General Catalyst Names Trevor Oelschig as Partner in Bay Area

San Francisco -- Venture capital firm General Catalyst has named Trevor Oelschig as a managing director in its San Francisco and Palo Alto offices. Oelschig previously spent nine years at Bessemer, where three of his early-stage investments went on to have IPOs in the past three years. In his new role, he will focus on companies in enterprise and business applications. "At General Catalyst, I focus on the application layer with special attention paid to user-centric products with a sneaky potential to become hugely useful in enterprises," said Oelschig. "I also spend time on the underlying picks and shovels that help developers build great software and keep systems up and running." General Catalyst now has five managing directors in its Bay Area offices, managing investments in companies such as Snap, Stripe, Illumio, Gusto and Digit.

(Palo Alto, Calif.) Palo Alto-based Ooma, developer of a communications platform for small businesses and consumers, said on Friday it has priced an underwritten secondary offering. The company is selling nearly 2.9 million shares from entities affiliated with current stockholder Worldview Technology Partners for $8.85 each. The company won't receive any proceeds from the offering, which is expected to close on Wednesday.
