o Santa Clara-Based Intel to Buy Mobileye in $15 Billion Deal

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Intel, the Santa Clara-based chipmaker, said on Monday it will acquire Israel's Mobileye, a developer of computer vision technology for self-driving cars, in a deal valued at $15.3 billion. The company said the acquisition, for $63.54 a share in cash, will bolster its position in the fast-growing market for autonomous vehicle systems, data and services, expected to grow to $70 billion by 2030. Intel already has a foothold in the market with technologies for plotting a car's path and making real-time driving decisions. "Together, we can accelerate the future of autonomous driving with improved performance in a cloud-to-car solution at a lower cost for automakers," said Intel CEO Brian Krzanich. The combined autonomous driving organization, consisting of Mobileye and Intel's Automated Driving Group, will be headquartered in Israel and led by Amnon Shashua, Mobileye's co-founder, chairman and chief technology officer (CTO). The deal is expected to close by the end of this year.

o Palo Alto-Based RightHook Emerges with Autonomous Vehicle Testing Platform

Palo Alto, Calif. -- RightHook, a Palo Alto-based developer of self-driving vehicle simulation technologies, said on Monday it has emerged from stealth mode and launched its first product, a commercial software platform for testing autonomous vehicles in a virtual world. The launch comes as several companies vie to bring autonomous vehicles to the market. "Everyone in the sector needs better tools," said co-founder and CEO Warren Ahner, "but no one has offered an off-the-shelf virtual testing solution until now." RightHook said it acts as a neutral party in the development and testing space, helping manufacturers reach higher degrees of safety on a shorter timeline than they can execute internally. "Passengers in self-driving cars should be able to make their choices based on the same criteria we use today: ride quality, design and brand affiliation," said Ahner. "A safe system should be a given, not a feature."

o CompTIA: U.S. IT Sector Adds 7,300 Jobs in February

Downers Grove, Ill. -- Paced by another strong month of hiring in software and technology services, the U.S. information technology (IT) sector added an estimated 7,300 jobs in February, according to a new report from CompTIA, the IT industry association. Software and technology services, which have led technology job growth over the past year, added an estimated 5,500 new positions during the month and 16,800 so far this year, an analysis of statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed. And for the first time in several months, the telecom sector saw job gains, adding 1,900 positions. Job declines were recorded in computer and electronics products manufacturing (down 800) and data processing, hosting and related services (down 700). "IT occupation data tends to show a higher degree of volatility from month to month," said Tim Herbert, the senior vice president of research and market intelligence at CompTIA. "In 2016, for example, there were seven months of job gains and five months of job losses. This reflects the normal pattern of labor turnover whereby workers may resign to seek new opportunities, retire or are laid off." The number of IT occupation job postings in February totaled an estimated 107,900, up 16,700 from January.
