o San Francisco-Based Breakout Labs Invests in Four Deep Tech Startups

San Francisco -- Breakout Labs, the Thiel Foundation's seed-stage fund for deep technology companies, said on Thursday it has made four new investments, sinking an unspecified amount into New York-based Envisagenics, Boston-based Gel4Med, San Francisco-based LogicInk and Milpitas-based SciBac. o California Ranks No. 8 on MoveHub's Best States for Women List

California ranks No. 8 on MoveHub's newly released list of The Best and Worst U.S. States for Women in 2017. The rankings consider data such as gender pay gap, political representation in the state legislature, equality in education, accessibility to health insurance, reproductive rights and the number of incidents of violence against women at the hands of men. Hawaii, Vermont, Minnesota, Illinois and Maryland top the rankings, which are available at the link below. Overall, the study found that states scoring poorly in terms of political representation also did badly on factors such as equal pay and women's reproductive rights, suggesting that the quality of women's lives is somewhat determined by inequality in government.

o Study: 89% of Top U.S. Advertisers Maintain Poorly Written Websites

Baltimore -- Eighty-nine percent of the top-spending U.S. advertisers fail to use clear, plain language on their websites, according to a new study by  VisibleThread. The company analyzed websites operated by Advertising Age's top 200 national advertisers, based on 2016 ad spend, grading them for the readability of content, use of passive language, length of sentences and proportion of complex words relative to total word count. "A large percentage of advertising spend is designed to drive traffic to company websites that are poorly written," VisibleThread wrote. "Increasingly, the point-of-sale is through a company's website. Failure to use clear language that is readable will reduce potential lead capture, conversion and sales." Top overall scores went to Dish Network, Clorox, Mattel, Expedia and Home Depot. The complete list is available through the link below.
