o DOJ Launches Criminal Investigation into Software Used by Uber

San Francisco -- The Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into San Francisco-based ride-hailing service Uber, specifically targeting the company's use of software designed to help drivers circumvent local government officials in markets where its service had not yet been approved. Reuters said the software, known as "Greyball," targeted certain users by changing information they saw in the app, including the location of Uber vehicles. The company said the system, first exposed by The New York Times in March, was designed to protect drivers from harm and prevent fraud. But employees told Reuters that it also was used against local officials, who may have been looking to impose fines, impound cars or shutter Uber's operations. Sources told Reuters that the investigation is still in its early stages, and the likelihood of any criminal charges remains unclear.
