o San Francisco-Based Grammarly Raises $110 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Grammarly, a San Francisco-based startup that uses machine learning and AI to help improve people's writing, said on Monday it has raised $110 million in its first institutional round of funding, led by General Catalyst. Breyer Capital, IVP, SignalFire and Spark Capital also participated. The company, which had been bootstrapped since its founding in 2009, said it will use the proceeds to expand its staff, which currently sits at 110. Grammarly's core communications assistant scans text in messages, documents and social media posts, making suggestions to help users improve their writing. Suggestions are designed to help users not only write correctly, but also structure their messages, adopt the right tone and choose words that their recipients will understand. The company said it has seen rapid growth since launching as a free service two years ago, and now counts 6.9 million daily active users. "Our product addresses a fundamental need -- improving communication and understanding," said CEO Brad Hoover. "We look forward to accelerating our growth and helping many more people in the coming years."

o San Francisco-Based SiFive Lands $8.5 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- SiFive, a San Francisco-based fabless provider of customized, open-source-enabled semiconductors, said on Monday it has landed $8.5 million in its second round of funding, led by Spark Capital. Osage University Partners and previous backer Sutter Hill Ventures also participated in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $13.5 million. SiFive was founded by Krste Asanovic, Yunsup Lee and Andrew Waterman, inventors of the open RISC-V instruction set architecture. SiFive said it has shipped more than 1,000 software development boards to developers over their first six months of availability. "This investment will enable our continued growth for years to come, and will allow SiFive to further establish that alternatives really matter in an era where traditional silicon vendors no longer are the most innovative in the industry," said Jack Kang, the company's vice president of product and business development. Todd Dagres, a general partner at Spark Capital, will join the company's board of directors.
